root fusion

Dread Maintenance

My dreads are 11 months old and are making pretty normal progress. I have a question though about the roots. I have been noticing that they want to grow together. I try to pull them apart to keep them separated, but as this is happening at the root, it hurts to pull. Will thy work themselves out, or is there something I need to be doing to maintain them better?

Time of Day to Wash

Dread Maintenance

At almost 5 months, I find that if I go to bed with wet locs, I will wake up with beaver tails on the thicker ones. I try to wash in the am as much as possible

What Made you decide to dread?

General Talk

I'm just curious, what was the reason you all decided to dread your hair. Was it simply a cool idea? Political reason? Spiritual? Social statement? Laziness? Because you knew your parents would hate it? Your friend had them???

As for myself it was pure unadulterated compulsion. I got the idea and within 15 minutes I was home, found this website and was dreading. The more I did, the better I liked it. I had absolutely no idea what I was in store for!! I really dig the idea of it, the reaction from people (both good and judgmental), the community here on Dreadlocks forums, and so much more! I used to look young and pretty, now at 46 I look old (well middle-aged) and awesome. This is just far out, no two ways about it.

So what's your story?

wrapping dreads while sleeping

Dread Maintenance

I have heard people who wrap their dreads while they sleep. What is the reason for this? Does it help tighten them up? What is best to use to do this?

Help! dreads caught on fire

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

OH! Thank you SO much!! I felt in my heart that it'd be fine, but I was worried still and truly needed to hear it from a seasoned dread-vet. As you might imagine Spirit got the stones H-O-T the Lodge was perfect. Lots of healing, lots of gratitude, lots of clarity. We were working on the ceremonial land this weekend, preparing for Vision Quest in the spring and Sundance this summer. I'm honored to be able to pray in this way..... one of my lessons this week was to protect that which is dear to my heart, Unci Makka, (the Grandmother Earth), Our Ceremonial Land, and my DREADLOCKS, LMAO!!

Help! dreads caught on fire

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I was the fire keeper at Lodge today (my spirituality is through The Lakota way) and as I was standing by the fire, a wind blew hard toward my direction, and my dreads (although mostly out of my way) caught fire. The wind and heat was so intense it knocked me off balance. I brushed handfuls of singed hair off my head. My dreads are still intact, albeit somewhat... shorter, but it's frizzy and charred. Please help me to nurture them back to health. I am rincing with some cocoa butter and Lavender oil as I write this. Is that enough? Will they still develop normally? They are only about 10 weeks old, but looked awesome already...I'm a little "ocd" and just LOVE my dreads. I don't want to put too much shit in them, but I'm nervous..... Any advise is appreciated. I'll be online for several hours. If you want to email my address is cschell1031@yahoo.com, or I'll be checking back on the boards in a bitWopila, thank you

Bumps and snakes

Dread Maintenance

I'm about 3 months into dreading and after a 4 day visit to the hospital I've developed these bumps and kinks or "snakes" in some of my dreads. I don't know how to even them back out. Will they just even themselves out? I have wondered about beads and individually wrapping them as I've seen some do in pictures, but I don't know how to wrap, or what the process is. Besides, as I mentioned, they are only 3 months old, still babies. I don't want to prevent them from maturing properly. Any suggestions?
