So what made you decide to have dreads?

General Talk

I have tried to be "normal" almost my whole life. One day while taking a personal inventory I came upon my reality. My name is Pranee. I am the only person in my family history with red hair and freckles (parents are native american and french go figure!) I struggle to fit someone else's idea of normal and I feel like a hypocrite every day of my life... Then I pictured my body in it's created state, then added what I think is the "self" persona. Had quite a giggle for a minute then realized she had dreadlocks (and fairy wings and sparkles)! So I guess when it boils down, I have dreads because when I close my eyes and see myself proudly, I have dreads. Even before they are mature. When I used to pass a mirror I would stop and say "WTF??" and now I say "Hey baby!" LoL my husband says they're intimidating!!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

My son uses Nutrogena T gel for a wash, I used it once and it wicked dryed my hair. It is awesome for dandruf though. Maybe massage it into your scalp and then give your hairs a good acv rinse afterwards. At least it might help with the itchy and flakey! Much love to the dreads!

Best alternative to wool is..?

Dread Maintenance

I love this discussion! I have been vegetarian for 10 years now but refrain from calling myself vegan due to the wool thing. My mother goes every year to colonial williamsburg in Virginia and gets a fleece. They have a special breed of sheep there and they are very well kept. I always enjoy wearing a mask, glasses and gloves to help her process and card them (I am allergic to raw wool). I also have a local apiary that I get my honey from, the owner loves his bees and sells it sparingly. I love honey!!!I also frequent the local thrift store and recycle the ugly wool sweaters that no one else will buy when they sell for $1.00 and next trip is to the garbage. I love to knit!!!

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I am not sure there is anything that can be done, maybe try to sew it together and then have a bead cover the stitches? I am so sorry to hear about your dread coming out. Also sorry no one has posted a reply, you are not alone my dear! Sending love your way!

A question on congos..

Dread Maintenance

sounds similar to what I have going on. Just try to be more gentle on your scalp. some times when you got the little hairs in the middle try grabbing less in order to seperate them, pull till the attached dread shortens and then pull the dread until it releases the hair. I think this is the only time I grab some aloe vera gel and palm roll the loose hair to the dread in which it belongs. This is the only time I palm roll though and I generally do it once a week. but pull aparts are whenever I remember, like once a day or so. Good luck!

General Talk

I hear you on the violence thing, I was on a missionary trip to NY and we stopped at a place in NJ and were told by someone in a parking lot to remove our headcoverings before we get too far from our car, I was thankful for the warning! Most of us just had regular blue bandanas on!

Would you put Dreads on your Child?

General Talk

I have three boys and encourage self expression. They choose their hair and clothes (to a certain extent) I do require under wear to stay under! lol! 14 and 10 year olds have the Justin beiber hair cuts and the baby 4yo chose the blue mohawk. I couldn't be more proud!!! As for bullies or neg comments I get mostly odd looks from people. Me with my crazy hair and bells on and a baby with a blue spikey mohawk, we are a vision!!!! It would be awesome if someone got something peirced!!!!
