Dreads and the healthcare profession...

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I am one semester from graduating RN program at school. This first semester of Med Surg was the first time I had any issues with my dreads. I usually keep them covered in a tichel (beautiful Jewish head covering) due to the amount of germs in a hospital setting. The Dean of Nursing came to my clinical site for reviews and told me that my head covering was not part of the approved uniform. So then I kept my hair in a bun, which was a pony tail high on my head and tucked the dread ends back around as they are still too short for a real bun.

I am also a volunteer doula at a hospital and have a good rapport with my patients, their families, and the medical staff. I have never had negative comments made about my dreads in that setting although I did have to tell someone I do not use feces as a strengthener (I mean, what the heck? Wouldn't they be able to smell that? And I'm a redhead, that would be difficult to match with feces!).

lice and fleas on dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Right on soaring eagle! I spend a lot of time in the woods and I use an all natural shampoo as a rinse. It is for dogs, but it has citronella, rosemary, and tea tree oil in it. it is residue free and my dreads like it too!

Fasting?

Dreads and Diets

I have done extended fasts and usually juice 3carrots/1stalk celery/1apple and a bit of ginger three to five times a day. To help regulate blood sugar I drink four oz of grape juice and drink pau d'arco tea for the anti fungal effect. Either that or once a day for a few days drink chaporal tea but you MUST be careful with it because it can destroy your liver. Drink plenty of water every day and if you can drink barley greens it helps too. I have a recipe I will look for that you can cleanse your intestines with it has psyllium husk, marshmellow root, pepermint, and charcoal in it... not as bad as it seems but it sure gets the job done! Whew! I'll look it up soon for you and look for this thread. I usually only feel hungry the first day, after that I have such energy I can go a few weeks without solids, even chasing after 3 boys and getting plenty of exercise, first or second day you might want to make a day off from work though. It helps if you can get in the spiritual zone needed for a fast. Best of wishes!!

"Because im the parent"

Dreads in the Family

I had "strange ideas" when I was growing up(according to my parents)! My mother threatened to put Nair in the conditioner bottle in response to me partially shaving my head, threatened to have me locked up (mental) for "driving holes in everything that dangled", and finally glued my hands in a prayer position after I started practicing wicca! lol! yeah, we don't talk very often now a days! I also left home a week after my 16th birthday. Now I have three kids that are all very normal (where did they get that from?). I don't tell them not to do things, only think about the consequences and the outcomes... only my 5 year old is experimental enough to don the Mohawk!

sick of my dreads

General Talk

Be sure about whatever decision you make before you do or undo anything to your dreads! I had a fit of hormones and brushed mine out... a very long and painful process... ouch! I have not brushed my hair since November due to the pain I experienced from it. Which leads me to say, I am finally getting knotty again! Maybe you just need a new bead, or a trip to the beach! Or wear a tam for a while and then when it comes off you might be over it and so glad that you stuck it through! I sure wish I had! Also try changing your method of washing for a week or so, I know I felt differently about my dreads when they looked dull as usually my hair is pretty shiny. I like it shiny. Hope you get past this part soon! It is a process!

Dread Progression. Back to Front?

Dread Maintenance

When I do use a bar soap I use Kirt's Castile. It seems to rinse clean and doesn't leave my hair like Dr. Bronners does... I can feel a difference, maybe it's just me. SE, you're right about being cutesy! lol! I love that word!

Good to use on body when wet, not good for hair any time! unless the greasy look suits you lol! jojoba oil is good! I recently mixed in some grow with me red rasberry herbal essence conditioner with my dr bonners and got nice and soft! Maybe a treat to my dreadies once a month or so!
