Can dread beads lead to mold?

Introduce Yourself

What should one do if they think they have mold?? And what about wraps? I've seen many dreadies with wraps around certain dreads and it looks awesome, but I would think that would be even more dangerous than beads...??

Can dread beads lead to mold?

Introduce Yourself

I love dread beads and have a number of wooden ones in my hair, plus two metal cuffs. They are so pretty and I don't take them out. There are a couple that I don't know if they will come out now.I am nervous though about mold. How do dreads get moldy? Can beads cause problems with mold? What do you do when you get mold? How do you know when you have mold?I wash with BS and use tea tree, peppermint, and rosemary oils in it. As far as I know, I have not had any problems so far, but I'm a little paranoid ever since I found out that dreads can get moldy. Any thoughts on this?

does anyone know of a good site to buy real human hair for dread extensions??

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

Actually, if you would like - I have a whole set of medium length alpaca wool dread extensions - totally natural materials - that you are more than welcome to have. They are dyed medium brown - but can be dyed any color you wish, and they are very light - almost have no weight at all. I bought them thinking that I would use them, but I changed my mind, now I don't know what to do with them. I would be happy to part with them for a serious discount - you tell me what sounds reasonable and we will talk. They feel like real-hair dreads, very soft and fluffy - very nicely dreaded. I would probably be a good idea to keep them wrapped in a plastic shower cap or something when you wash your hair tho and just wash your scalp. Let me know what you think.

sleeping without any head covering: bad idea?

Dread Maintenance

This is funny because I had the same concern about sleeping with a hat on - how to keep it on my head? I actually only thought I needed to have something because I saw a lot of comments on this site about people putting wool sweaters on their pillows or wearing some kind of thing on their heads as they slept. So I got a friend of mine who makes tams to make me one with a string through the "brim" of it that I can pull tight and tie around my hair line. I have no idea if this is helping, but I got to say, my head feels so warm and comfy at night when I do wear it to bed - especially now that it is getting cold out! :)

No Loops, No Kinks...Thinking About Giving Up

Dreading Methods

I also have had the same experience. My hair is very straight and fine (but thick) - silky, you know? Weeks have gone by, no combing, no conditioner or special shampoos - just what was recommended here and got nothing. About 2 weeks ago, I sectioned off my hair and twisted/ripped and backcombed the sections. I just think that with hair like ours, the sections need something to anchor the ends with so the middle areas will start tangling (or something like that). I am really happy with how it turned out - though I must say my head looks like a big hairy mess right now.Just a question for those who did help their dreads along through the T/R/B methods - how long roughly did it take for the sections to really start tightening up and actually dreading on their own? I am trying not to obsess - hahhaha - but I am curious.Hang in there, Panterra - I look forward to hearing how things go for you in the future.

2 months old :)

Dreading Methods

Your hair is beautiful! I wish I had nice curls like you that will naturally knot up! My hair is very straight and silky, they need a little help to knot up. 3 months of not combing at all and using non-residue shampoo - and then the baking soda mix has led to nothing. Not one knot, not one tangle. lol! So tonight I started twisting and ripping with a little back-combing mixed in to help them along. I hope it works out for me.Anyway, I just love, love, love your hair! Your dreads will be fantastic!Thanx for sharing the pix! :)

Just from your profile pic, I think your dreads look awesome. I realize you have to live with them, but try not to fret so much. I hope my dreads look that good at 4 mos! :)

Well my longest reach to my underarms(they're shrinking so they wont reach for long :P) what I use is
a cup that fits just under 3 cups
2tbsp of baking soda
4 drops Tea tree
6 drops Rosemary
6 drops Peppermint

then a cup that fits 2 cups of water and a generous splash of acv

It's been working really well for me :D

First I just want to say I LOVE THIS SITE! Every time I have a question about something I just look and usually someone has already asked it - and so many kind people with great suggestions! Thank you!!! I was interested in this discussion because I have a problem with dandruff too - I don't have my dreads yet, but I'm getting ready! lol!
But one thing I was wondering, and it seemed to be touched on in this forum, is the measurements for the individual ingredients for the shampoo. I am thinking that the amounts that SE quoted in his post about taking care of dreads might be too much for me - so what do you think for brand new short baby dreads as far as amounts of the different ingredients?
