cutting dreads

Dread Maintenance

many of mine are doing similar things.. my dreads are also 10 months...hmm I cut one of mine a few months ago and I regret it. I didn't like the face that they were clumping up so much. But they are still changing and I feel like my roots to the clumpy parts still have a lot of thickening up to do and the clumpy parts are still changing and shifting...It's amazing how much a dread can change over night. Your hair looks and will look amazing!

I just combed out my year old waxed dreads a few months ago. It took me over a month to do it. ( I have a newborn) and I was averaging a dread or two a day. I tried a lot of things. But what I think really helped for me in getting the wax out was my flat iron. I snipped to tip of the dread. wrapped it in a paper towel and pressed the dread with the iron, trying not to stay in the same place for too long. When I felt like the wax was heated up enough, I immediately dunked the dread in a cup of olive oil and then wrung it out by squeezing it between my thumb and forefinger down the length of the dread...I would then either repeat the process (being extremely careful with the flat iron) or scrub it with dawn and hot water.. I ended up preferring the olive oil to conditioner for combing them out and definitely a wide toothed comb. In the end though what you'll really need is patience! Good luck!

Did someone just seriously RECCOMEND Interlocking???? Really? Here?

Introduce Yourself

I know a young woman who's actually balding. She tightly interlocks her dreads and also occasionally takes a lighter to her fuzzies. She's had her dreads for a few years and there's no use telling her these things aren't good for her hair (even though the evidence is shining through) because she's always right. Just thought I'd share...

If you're curious to see some dread progression and more mature dreads, the Danish girl in the TnR video has a couple deviantart pages with her dreads at various stages up to 18+ months, I believe...

Some well done TnR documentation would be awesome!
I didn't do it cuz I'm too lazy and for me, it would be like watching a clock... if that makes sense...

Reasons for starting your dreadlocks?

General Talk

I had hair down to my bum and got sick of brushing it. I love not having to do anything to my hair.

Natural Color vs. Dyed/Multicolored

General Questions

hmm.. well I just read a tiny bit about shearing sheep and it seems it's not always as harmless as one might think. Sheep can die from exposure and the people doing it can be too rough and cut the sheep etc... So I guess it seems best to buy from a local farmer that cares and dye the wool yourself.. Dana Moen said:
I don't think cotton would work the same, unless you want to try wrapping with cotton thread, which has a different effect. I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm pretty sure the sheep aren't harmed when they're sheared..maybe just humiliated ;)

Paula said:
Yeah I've seen this and it looks really nice. BUT...as a vegan I wouldn't be comfortable with using wool...do you know of any alternatives? ...is there a cotton option??.. :)

I don't know much about it yet, and I want to look into doing this myself, but you could try wrapping your dreads in wool roving... http://www.weirdollsandcrafts.com/needle-felting-roving/roving-dyed...

I believe you wrap it around a dread and then wash it with warm soapy water and it like shrink wraps the dread...It seems like it could be a good way to get a lot of color without going through bleaching and destroying your hair with chemicals. I've seen pictures of people who've done this and it can be beautiful, I think, as long as the wool isn't too thick (just my opinion). I don't know anything about how easy it is to remove and I assume you'd just take extra care in drying them. I'm going to experiment with it as soon as I can get my hands on some. they don't sell it at any of the craft stores where I live. boo!
