Reasons for starting your dreadlocks?

General Talk

I've always hated my hair. I also got sick of chemical processes used to make my hair look "acceptable". Then i started to get extensions in fun bright colors, i did that for 5 years thinking my hair would grow. My hair never grew past my shoulders and i believe this was due to all the previous years of damage. I've always thought dreads were beautiful and decided to give it a go. Since starting my dreads i have never felt more comfortable with my hair .. or myself for that matter.Plus the maintenance ( or lack thereof) fits my lifestyle perfectly.

i want dreads, but i dont want dreads that look like dreads

Dreading Methods

I have to agree.. My dreads are messy because I like them that way... To me messy is beautiful... But I don't think people with maintained dreads are wrong, that's just how they view beautiful... Anyways I understand the damage doing certain methods could cause but honestly it isn't that much more worse that using curling irons or striaghteners on one's hair... Idk I just think people should do what they want... As long as they are aware of what they are doing :)

this is awfully judgemental haha and I thought dreadies were all about personal choice I keep my dreads neat because that's what I do, just because I do does that mean I am viewed as someone who looks down on others that don't choose to keep them like mine? lol this is a bit short sighted...

Hi

Introduce Yourself

Haha yea she actually bought it.. she had wanted me to go to a salon to get them done.. I had previously been getting braids put in every couple months for about 5 years and i was sick of sitting in a chair for 8 hours at a time and i was sick of extensions. I'm multi-ethnic and i think alot of people told her i needed wax or needed something to tame the nappyness. I actually explained to her that in order for my hair to knot there needed to be nappyness and the texture of my hair was actually a plus in this whole process. soaringeagle said:
haa welcome it amazesd me that shed actualy have to buy it and touch it to decide not to use it i mean..its called wax right? do you really need to touch wax and feel how waxy it feels to know wax will probably feel waxy?

it just goes to prove the power of marketting
but then again i guess that was proved long ago when thousands of people bought pet rocks or raised societies of sea monkeys

Hi

Introduce Yourself

Thanks.. I have a feeling I will really like it here. I do have dreads, i started in Novemeber of 2009 with some light backcombing, my mom wanted to use wax.. she bought it.. touched it.. and changed her mind about using it in my hair.. so i pretty much left them alone and added some beads in December to keep some of the sections i made
