How big does a section have to be for hair to dread

Introduce Yourself

If you keep them separated they should dread by themselves, but if you don't they will probably get eaten up by other dreads.

The things people say.

Life Issues Facing Dreads

The other day I was sitting on my bed with my best friend and the topic of my dreads came up. She is not really supportive of my nappy head and is verbal in that. She started talking about how I use to have such pretty hair and everything, to which I responded that I feel that my hair is beautiful now. She then said to me, and I quote, "It just isn't NATURAL."I literally turned to her and said, "Are you fucking kidding me?"I asked her what she thought people did before hair brushes and shampoos and conditioners. Hair knots naturally and its these things that we humans have created through out time that stop it from doing so.I just wanted to share because I am sure there are other people out there who hear negative and in my opinion quite ignorant statements about the beautiful mess we have on our heads.xoxo

I can't keep them apart!

Dread Maintenance

I make sure to separate completely to the scalp. I actually usually start by ripping them apart at the scalp, then down towards the end of the dread. I also try to do most of my ripping when wet. Thank you guys for the advice! I will have to try a few of these out.

I can't keep them apart!

Dread Maintenance

Does anyone know of someway to help keep my dreadies apart better? I have to rip them apart everrryyy night to keep them separate. They just want to eat each other and turn into one massive knot around the roots. It's crazy, cause sometimes you can lift one dread and about 6 more come with it.Help! It's a pain to have to rip them apart every night. If it is the only thing to do then I will do it, but if there is any tips they would be greatly appreciated!

General Talk

I have been neglecting mine and I hardly have "thick ass locks". i actually have pretty small sized locks. It is all about what your hair wants to do. If it wants big locks it will create them, and if it wants small ones it will make those.

Almost a month in!

General Talk

Hello loves,It has been about a month since I stopped brushing and started dreading the natural way. So far everything has been going great! I have some that are knotting so well and so quickly it amazes me. I am up to around 55 dreads now and new ones are forming every week! The back of my head has dreaded much quicker I am guessing because I sleep on them. I also went to the beach and the salt water seemed to help with knotting. I am so very excited to see how they form and grow. I just wanted to fill you guys in on how everything is going and share my excitement. I thought I might miss my old hair every once in a while, but there has yet to be a day that thought has crossed my mind. I am absolutely in love with each little knotting section forming in my hair! I just can't believe how quickly some of them are tightening up and maturing. The only problem I have had so far is how unsupportive my best friend has been about it. I don't really understand the hesitance of people to accept dreads. I try explaining to her that its not like there is some nasty growth on my head, that it is still my hair just in a different form. Hopefully she will learn to love them as much as I do. We just got a house together today so she will be seeing them pretty regularly! She better get use to it!<3

natural dreads photos or timeline ??

Dreading Methods

I just started naturally a little over a week ago. I just uploaded some pictures onto my page of my first week. They started VERY quickly! Take a look if you would like. All I have been doing is washing with bronners every few days and tearing apart sections that are knotting, then I usually palm roll them just to make them easier to pick out when I am fooling with them. Good luck with your journey!

Reasons for starting your dreadlocks?

General Talk

I never really considered having dreads until about 3 or so years ago. It was actually when I met a girl named kayla that I thought about it. She had the most amazing and beautiful set of locks and I absolutely fell in love with them. After meeting her and talking to her about her story I started to research how to start them and whatnot. I started a set once before and combed them out immediately because I knew it just wasn't my time to have them. Finally, a few weeks ago I reached the point in my life where I decided I wanted them and stopped brushing. I loved my hair the way it was, but I needed change. I love the low maintenance aspect of it, but mostly I am doing it because I love how beautiful and individual each dread is. It amazes me how your hair can almost act as a separate entity. They change and each one has it's own personality. I also decided to because my hair seemed to want to on it's own despite conditioning and brushing. I would wake up almost every morning with a huge ratty clump of knotted hair on my head. My boyfriend even commented on how my hair seemed to looooove knotting.I am so excited to continue my journey and see what sort of mischief my hair decides to get into.
