Separating In The Early Stages of Natural/Neglect

Dread Maintenance

Im only on Day 5 but my hair is already knotting like crazy in the back. The knots are starting at the tips, which is normal right?, but they are pretty knotty up to the mid point. When and where do I separate? I dont want just one big mass of knot but I only read to separate at the roots? Should I start separateing them now so that they dont get into one big knot?We need a How/When-To-Separate thread.

Natural Method & Washing

Dread Maintenance

Im sure this question is old, but I searched and didnt really find anything.Im only in Day 2 of my dread journey (unofficially, Day 2, Im not counting the crochet-crap)I plan to wash every other day with either Dr. Bronners or the baking soda wash. I also ordered a bar from Maylees.Anyways, my question. When I wash, do I wash just my scalp and let the water run over my hair or do I get my hair all lathered up and swished around on my head? I know that when you have baby dreads, you want to be more gentle, but since I want to encourage knotting right now, I thought maybe I should wash more vigorously? Thanks :)

Nothing? Really? That's All I Have To Do?

Dreading Methods

Thats the truth! We never comb my 2 year olds hair and she has like 4 little dreads in the back . lolI guess I just dont see how people get these beautiful long dreads out of it all. Why is it not just a mess of knots? A big matting of hair? Im so afraid to mess this up. :/ soaringeagle said:
yup pretty much
i mean u can mindlessly play with it lil bit but dont gotta in fact that could help and hurt at nearlt the same time..lol
literaly the most dreading happens right after washing, and..while u sleep..yup in your sleep
now if yoir in a coma and literaly dont move yout dreading will be slow but if u just move your head alittle whike u sleep it will cause knotting and compactinhg
dreads are how your hair wants to be all your life u worked hard to prevent dreads so just stopping what u did to prevent them (comb/condition) will simply allow the drewds to show up the hairs tried to dread since birth and would have if noone combed it all those years

Nothing? Really? That's All I Have To Do?

Dreading Methods

I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that all I have to do for natural dreadlocks is nothing. Everything else in my life is so incredibly difficult right now, it hardly seems possible that this will be so relaxing. It's so much what I've been searching for, but it almost seems to good to be true.Really?Aside from washing and eventually separating, (which will be a whole 'nother thread soon enough) I do nothing?BTW-Couldn't stand those last few crochet dreads in my hair so I took them out too. I'm going all 100% natural from here on out!But is it really that simple?

Rubber bands/TnR/Neglect

Dreading Methods

Thats my thought too. We just did my daughters. She has straight, thick hair that wont even hold a curl and hers are holding just fine. Its been 3 days now and they have barely loosened and she washed them. Maybe try the TnR again? JESSICA EVA said:
are you sure you did the tnr right? i can't really see how they would really unravel more than just a little bit.

Rubber bands/TnR/Neglect

Dreading Methods

How long was the TnR in?I would guess that the knots would start at the nape in your neck, thats where my hair tangles the fastest too..

Hello- new here, dread hopeful!

Introduce Yourself

Also, be prepared that when he really sees you with your own dreads, he might just change his mind and be incredibly drawn to you. Mine did that (wasn't against them to begin with tho), and i've heard of others doing that too. if guys can dig the Nature aspect of things, it's like seeing you become empowered and strong to their eyes, even if you already were, it's a physical embodiment of that light within you. A sense of self, and confidence is so alluring. That's just my interpretation though..
This is what my hubby did and now that Im going natural, hes even more excited!Welcome :) This site is awesome!

Whats so bad about salon dreads

General Questions

I did crochet dreads at a salon. Now, 2 weeks later Iv'e taken them out. They look fake, they are horrible for your hair and you miss out on the most important part, yourself.Ive been there done that. Dont do it.
