so i got an email today about manicured locs

Dread Maintenance

It's almost like tobacco and the executives. Everybody knows that they are bad for you, and there are huge organizations spreading the truth, yet people still smoke them. They learn from there ignorance and experience. Big tobacco makes money, just like johnny clean and those twisted locticians, and I'm pretty sure they all know they are doing bad things. Just on a different scale of course. :)

Oh the guilt!

Dread Products

I have a similar problem with a friend, but at least he isn't using wax. He just maintains constantly and complains about loose hairs. You can show them the truth all you want, but in the end, it is up to them to make the decision. You can only hope for the best.

Guys and beads

General Talk

Beads in any ones hair is great, as long as you think it looks good that is all that matters. There are some really cool and unique beads out there, just keep an eye out. I have 4 beads, and an acme pale ale bottle cap it my hair.

Convinving someone to stop maintaence?

General Questions

I have a really good friend who is doing dreadlocks the second time around for him. He actually helped me get started on mine, which was great, and he was never one for wax so it was never put in my hair by him. So I am glad that he doesn't wax, but he is set one palm rolling all the time and thinks that it actually helps. He really wants to control the size of them and his biggest complaint about his dreads in the past was that he hated loose hairs. I have tried to get him to come to terms with everything that they do on there own and it is a journey that you just need to go with the flow. So my question is after he backcombs his dreads(there is no way he will go natural, or even tnr) how do I try to get him to see the light of the dreadlock journey? He spends too much time worrying about how they look, and nobody should have to do that.

Lookin like poo

General Talk

How long have you been dreading? You really just need to take some time to forget about it man, it is just hair, it will mat up within a year or so, and it will keep changing after that. There really is no need to ever worry about what it looks like. If you are that worried, dreadlocks may not be the answer for your hair.

Shedding a lot of hair

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I had a similar problem a few months ago, (I'm at about 6 months now) so I stopped touching them and then when they got a little tighter it stopped altogether.

Introdicing myself!

Introduce Yourself

Whenever I wash I always notice little changes in my hair, so yes washing will promote locking. Katie Murphy said:
OK so I'm on day 3 right now, and my hair is starting to chunk up into the curls. I feel like progress is happening already :) Will washing it help it to tangle? I don't really know how often to wash do I wait till my roots start to get oily or do I want to wash before they get oily?

To those worried about swimming.

General Talk

Stop worrying! Seriously though, I just got off of the Colorado river, did a bunch of jumping off of the boat to go for a swim, I even jumped off about a 50 foot drop. I got kicked into some rapids and went for a wild swim there, battled with dogs and oars the whole time. I feel my hair is actually doing better after all of this, it seemed crazy at first, and that they were coming loose, but just days after they are getting gnarly again! So my point is, just forget about all your worries and enjoy yourself. The crazy unique, twisted and gnarled dreads you have always dreamed of will come true eventually.Oh yeah, and go swimming in a river!
