General Questions

I started fresh 2 years ago and it's just the last 6 months or so that my dreads have really shown some solid form. The right side is definitely thicker & heaps shorter than the left. I think because I sleep on that side! Anyway, what I'm getting at is the natural process can be slow but ultimately rewarding as you learn patience & lose the stress & concern about what people think of your different look. Try & see if you can go with what you've got for a month. You might see them show a little movement & structure into something better than you expected.

Dread Maintenance

I did some maintenance last weekend, swimming in the ocean & building sandcastles in the wind. My dreads are running like a race car now!

Pics please SE? That sounds mad! I've never been able to grow a real beard but if I could I'd go all bushranger and let it be as unruly as hell.

When to trim

You asked a question and got responses. At this point in his life Jack Roth believes he will never cut them. As he & his dreads mature his opinion and lifestyle may change, or it may not. He is answering your question now with his present opinion. Everyone will have their own reasoning.Myself, I can see me trimming or even cutting them shorter to maybe even 6 inches or so if I felt the need or for a change of scenery. Hypothetically of course, I would have to be very sure before I went for it. Once they become too heavy or start to get cumbersome I will definitely trim them semi regularly. I think mid back to just above my butt will bw more than long enough for me personally. Dave Sullivan said:

Loops & swirls abound through the length of mine from roots to tip as well. Sadly the ones I like seem to disappear while the kinks that irk me hang around for ages!Welcome to the site:)

My 7 year old son wants to be just like me and it makes my heart beam. However when he tells his mother he wants to get his ear pierced, or grow his hair long, or get a tattoo, or a motorbike... well she kinda let's me know subtley that she doesn't think my style is exactly how she wants him to look. I understand totally and accept it because as he grows older he will become better equipped to make his own decisions and I truly hope that he still wants to be like his dad. For the time being though I take a great sense of pride when I see him change from a t-shirt into a singlet if that's what I'm wearing on the weekends he stays with me. Kids are awesome and really are mini versions of their parents but you have to let them develop their own style as well.

Congrats on making the 1st step to letting your hair be itself and by extension yourself as well!@ SE, dude you'll be able to sit back when new members intro themselves and ask questions. Neil, Paula and alot of others are gaining the knowledge to help answer early questions and have gained the ability to do so from your own guidance. Must feel pretty special huh brother:D

KS I found buying a few bars at a time, costing around $30 including freight to Australia has been more efficient than buying the shampoo & conditioner I had been using on my normal hair. I got 3 bars, none of which bombed out my tiny unit with overpowering scent, I'm still using the 1st one. The Om scented bar is completely me,I just hope the other 2 suit me as well cos the bars last a reasonably long time.I wash with baking soda, then lather up with Maylees, 2-3 times a week, & the bar is well over a month old with still another fortnight left in it easily. I can't recommend them enough! Even one of my extra picky girlfriends agreed at last that dreads don't mean dirty smelly hair when we last hung out. The subtle scent is perfect for showing people that yes I am a clean person still=PI haven't had a problem with rinsing it out, but I am a demon for making sure I have rinsed thoroughly.
