NEW backcombed dreads, Advice?

Dread Maintenance

well actualy...what I did was kindof complicated. I did use a teasing plastic comb, has little bristles inside that make tangles faster. I back combed for a few strokes then did some twist and rip until it wouldn't catch anymore hair. then I backcombed some more and twist and rip again.I tried doing all backcomb and I really didn't like it. Then I tried all twist and rip and there would be a point where my hair wouldn't knot anymore because it's really softsoaringeagle said:
u shoulda twstt and ripped instead of backcombed theyd hold together way better
but ok
i wouldnt really worry bout it cause backcombing never really shoulda been part of dreading, if they unravel they'll still dread just fine
i dont think u should braid to wash unless u want a dread helmet they very easily could all become a great big tangled mass

u can cover em while u sleep and tie em back for work
i would really recommend removing the bands asap 2 days max no longer

for future dreads twist and rip instead u will worry less they'll hold up better

wash gently 1st few washes

NEW backcombed dreads, Advice?

Dread Maintenance

So I just finished just over half of my head, and I was wondering what I can do to prevent them from coming out.I mostly backcombed them. I do have rubber bands at the roots but I don't know if that will actually help any. Should I wear something wrapped around my head tonight? Is it ok to tie them up or braid them together during the day? I know they will only mature if they can move around, but I need to look "decent" for a few hours a day. If I I braid them together to take a shower will that help them to stay together? They are pretty well together now but I know that they'll probably loosen up for a few weeks.

Anyone know if the Whole Foods 365 Citrus shampoo is residue free?

Dread Maintenance

I bought it a long time ago thinking..hey if it's natural it has to be good for my hair. But it actually dried my hair and stripped it to a straw like quality. Now that I'm preparing to start my dreadlocks, I wonder if that's residue free.

How can I tell my mother that I'm getting dreadlocks?

Dreads in the Family

Yeah I wanted to tell her immediatelly that I know I'm gonna look horoble to many people... I'll even look quite bad to myslf for the first few weeks/months but I'm not doing this to look better. I don't feel like a nomal person but I look like one(for the most part). Looking different makes for being recieved differently and truly, the only people I wantto be assosiated with are the types of people who will accept me dreadlocks and all.... But I think I'll go slowly one her. She's a good person but is incredibly stubborn and close minded. I'm just glad my dad is supporive(though I do t think he likes it either) and my older brother will probably want me to give him dreads after he sees how awesome mine will turn out(eventually)thanks so much for the advice!! I'm so glad I found this site :)

How can I tell my mother that I'm getting dreadlocks?

Dreads in the Family

Ok so i told her, i don't think she believed me at first. She understood what I was saying, I showed her pictures of the type of dreads I want. Eventually she told me I would look horrible... But I told her I am going to do it anyways and I think she gave up. I have gone through many "rebelious" phases(she thinks I rebel against her but o really don't) and she knows the way I am :)

As much as i would love this(plus theyd look great on her.. She has very nice bone structure) she would never in a million years do it. She is very insecure about her hair :/soaringeagle said:

Thats great advice thank you :))Island Mamma said:
Show her the thousands of beautiful deadlock pictures here and then if she reacts negatively say "Oh really, I love the look and feel and the freedom of them, I was thinking I would like to give dreads ago." (something along those lines)
If you do dread, go natural, it won't be so much of a shock because you grow into them rather than *poof* a head full of twists. The people around you have time to adjust slowly too.
