About to start dreading but have some concerns....

Dread Maintenance

My hair is VERY VERY dreaded, as well as dirty, so saying dirty hair wont dread, is not a statement of truth. I'm a little under two years all natural, and I have always washed my hair every couple of months. My knots are tight as hell, hard as rocks!

You don't wash your hair with aloe vera, you can use it to tame frizzes. Don't wash with it. Use a baking soda/water mixture, then rinse with ACV. Here's a recipe: http://www.dreadlockssite.com/forum/topics/super-clean-dreads-safe-for

You can use rubber bands to section, as long as you take them out after. Just twist & rip OR backcomb... people usually do one or the other. No idea what you mean by "stuff with a nit comb". I'd suggest skipping all of that and letting you hair go natural for a few weeks... it'll form more natural sections so you're not forcing hair into sections. This may result in dreads splitting down the line.

As I said, only use aloe vera if you need to tame your hair down a bit, but use sparingly. By doing the BS/ACV wash you can mix in essential oils which help with dandruff. Read the thread that I linked to. Also, your hair may be greasy now but as you progress it will become less and less. Just remember to wash whenever you feel you need to -- clean hair dreads, dirty hair doesn't. Best of luck.

Washing- How long is to long?

Dread Maintenance

I wash my dreads once a month, using a diluted form of Dr. Bronners Baby Mild and add tea tree and eucalyptus. I don't have problems with it getting dirty for about a month/.

Usually new growth wont dread right away because it's baby hair, so fine and soft, as soon as it gets a little less soft it'll dread nicer.I prefer the bar it get so much soapier and still rinses so clean! Liquid DB you need to dilute, or it'll irritate your skin. DeMarco Ryans said:
I had the liquid castile soap the citron one, but now I have the tea tree castille soap bar. Is there any benefit from using one rather than the other if you have any experience with liquid and bar. I've been hesitant to use the bar as I wasn't sure if it would leave build up/get rid of build up as well as the liquid soap. I cycle 7 miles minimum each day so heavy sweat is a daily occurrence for me.

thank you for the tips

Itchy and Scabby Scalp! Help!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

The itchy scalp and scabs are from your hair dreading, each little hair getting irked and pulled here and there. I have the same problem. Put a little tea tree oil on your scalp and it should clear up. It will return, because your hair is always going to be pulling. But when I use tea tree on my scratchy scabby scalp it goes away the next day. Instantly soothes. :]
