from personal experience can I say, rule out Arizona before you even go? haha, I just moved from there (Mesa, Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale) to Colorado a few months ago and so far I love my decision. Arizona heat is unbearable, it's summer 3/4ths of the year and fall the rest of the time. Colorado you can experience all four seasons in a day and rain three separate times in a day, beautiful hiking/backpacking scenery, some great kayaking, and of course it's fantastic for winter sports if that's you're forte. although around Aurora and Denver I've gotten some negative responses about my dreadies, stretched ears, tattoos, and such but if closed-minded people don't bother you it's AWESOME to be here if you haven't been before

I'm glad so many of you think so, thank you. I thought the before and after would show just how drastic of a change it was haha Ippy said:

wow that's surprisingly fast from what I thinking, if I would have known that I might have thought about going natural instead soaringeagle said:
naturals very hard to predict with your hair i could imagine it locking very very fast
mine well a week or 2 average a couple months tho some as long as a year
id guess most fall in the 4-6 months range but its not uncommon for some to dread in weeks

not too bad now, I'm kind of tender headed so it was starting to hurt but nothing I couldn't handle. good luck with the natural method. how long does it take for them to start really locking up?

I saw something somewhere about a shower cap so I thought I'd askand what are congos exactly? I've heard of them and can make a guess at what they are but I'm not sureyeah I've been looking for a good tam and have seen a few I'd like to get but haven't made the purchase yet IllumiKnotty said:
sure! it will keep your scalp from drying/itching

dont treat your dreads like celebrities -- do what you would normally do.

pretty much forget about them, throw all the mirrors in ur house away.

feel around for congos and separate them (maybe invest in a summer tam)

bamboo is natural anti fungal, absorbs swead/prevents mold

that's fine, I'm not trying to rush them :)actually I just bought some a couple hours ago so I'll start using it tomorrowone question I do have since we're on the topic, on the days I don't wash them should I wear a shower cap or will it be okay to let them get wet everyday? IllumiKnotty said:
yeah there is nothing you can do to speed up this process. sorry.

how often are you shampooing with residue free shampoo?

u should try to "ween yourself off"

first week wash every 2-3 days
second week every 3-4 days
third week every 4-5 days
and etc etc etc

your goal is to wash it once a week, maybe twice

after a while your hair will not get oily
