Peace Quinnamann, Pls Pls don't cut your dreads! Be patient and follow the vinegar recipes suggested to me b y soaring eagle, those helped tremendously with build up I couldn't see. As for the lint in the back dreads, I started on a journey with a dental pick, & discovered it was compacted lint in the back of my dreads. I read that rips your locks apart & ceased that procedure the next day but the one resolve was dying the tips. Lots of people have opinions about it and I feel strongly about wearing my hair naturally, but I care just as much about its cleanliness, health, and my locks appearing that way.

Hope this helps!
I will search for soaringeagle's prior posts & repost their links.

No Mold! I'm relieved & embarrassed to say...

Dread Maintenance

...it was excessive lint. As I'd mentioned I'd fallen asleep on covered, damp locks. Although I removed the covering after a couple of hours & kept the fan on, I awoke with a white substance in many locks. Long story short, about a week later, after many, many, many soaks, scrubs & reevaluation of every taken step I realized several mistakes. Although I ALWAYS cover my hair @ night & keep satin pillow cases on 2 pillows, another on my bed had a flannel pillowcase & the one time I decide to uncover my locks, I brushed them along side the flannel one & disaster struck lolol. It's funny now, but I was in tears for days :( I initially mistook it for mold, tried several remedies but to no avail. Eventually I took a dental pick & lots of patience & discovered all sorts of lint & buildup from my previous regimen, namely honey. While it was a terrible experience, I discovered things I wouldn't have otherwise as I've been researching for years & believed my regimen included only healthy things for my locks. I was very very wrong. Anyhow, due to some excellent advice from Soaringeagle most of that stuff has been released from my locks, they're softer, ligher, & even frame my face better. No honey, no twisting, no clips. Locking my hair has been very liberating for me in many ways. That freedom has taken on new heights since crossing paths with SOARINGEAGLE. Forever grateful, hugs*** I look forward to growing & sharing with everyone in Peace & Love....new pics coming soon, posted pic is from a couple of months ago but I already have growth since then :)P.S. please don't use honey, doesn't matter how much aloe or essential oils you mix with it, it will build up.P.S.S. my 18 month anniversary is in a week, how shall I celebrate????Peace Love & DreadLocksLadyLocks~~

Musty Smelling Hair

Dread Maintenance

Live & Learn I guess, no more honey for me. I suppose the apple cider vinegar prevented it from becoming worse than it is & hot oil treatments prevented me from really seeing the buildup. My locks looked & felt so healthy BUT I'm glad I found it now. I'm 3 1/2 hrs into this soak & have faith that the rest of it will be released. Anubis said:
honey = big, big, big no-no. I'm surprised mildew is the only issue since bugs like sweet stuff and all. Glad you mentioned that in case you planned on using it again.

Musty Smelling Hair

Dread Maintenance

Thanks for the great advice! I tried it & there is an improvement, moreso than anything else I've tried but the problem still persists :( I'm considering possibly doubling the remedy & soaking even longer perhaps??? Yesterday, I did a baking soda soak w/ tea tree oil for 40 min, rinsed with water, then diluted acv, allowed to soak 20 min, rinsed, then soaked my dreads for 2 hours using soaringeagle's suggestion. Perhaps I should've soaked 3 to 4 hours? I'm considering doing it now, but I really don't want cause more damage, perhaps I should hold off until tomorrow? Also until about a month ago, I used a mix of aloe vera, honey & olive oil to twist my locs & believe this may have been a contributing culprit to the buildup that didn't become apparent until after I stopped using the mix :( This is really discouraging as thought I was being so careful. Any suggestions??

Musty Smelling Hair

Dread Maintenance

OMG is that what this crap is in my locs??? Seriously, I've been in tears the last 3 days afraid that I couldn't figure out what was going on & assumed it was mold/mildew. However, I'm noticing everyone specific a stench associated with mildew & mine don't have a smell. Anyhow, I've been using Dr.Bronner's for 13 of the 18 months I've been loced. 3 days ago, after washing, I got lazy, threw on a loc sock, turned on the fan & went to sleep. I was paranoid about sleeping on damp locs & removed the scarf from my head half way through the night assuming I'd be ok with the fan. The next morning, I ran errands, came home & noticed when my locs were completely dry, some of them seemed encompass globs of really fine mushy lint. I've never had this problem & am very conscious of everyday materials in an effort to minimize lint. The substance only appeared to be only at the bottom of some locs in the back & assumed it was product residue so I washed washed washed with a clarifying shampoo, soaked my locs in baking soda & water for 30 min, rinsed with apple cider vinegar, everything...nothing's worked. I saw on some blog about washing with Dawn so yesterday I spent 8 hours washing & scrubbing, sat underneath the dryer but the same mushy linty substance is still there. I don't usually sleep on wet hair, & have always been very careful to use minimal products. Other that Bronner's, I use a clarifying shampoo sporadically. I normally do an ACV rinse with every other week & hot oil treatment every month. I use only olive, essential & herbal oils I make at home. I've always avoided waxes, petroleum, & mineral oils.Other than your comment on the mushy lint, I haven't come across another blog that remotely describes my problem & I'm PARANOID lol. Please help!! Does it seem to be the same issue? How did you remedy the problem? Sound familiar to anyone else??? oReOs said:
O.k. so In my experience,
1. I wouldn't use the blow dryer. I just feel that it's very misleading. You can blow dry as much as you want but I feel that the centers will still be wet.
2. to help prevent the musty smell, still try to keep your dreads as dry as possible.
3. you really don't need to was the dreds themselves. Just the scalp area. Especially Dr. Bronners users! after prolong use of Dr. Bronners in the actual dread part you will notice that the Dreads will tend to harden up. Like a harden that you don't want. What it is, is the Dr. Bronners still in the dreads. You can find little gobs of it that kind of look like mushy Lint. But like I said these are all in my experiences.
