Dread History?

History and Religious Significance

SE - just curious, where exactly in the bible does it say that Christ had dreadlocks and that they were to the ground????? What biblical "reference" are you "referring" to??? ha-ha!!! Nic Sullivan said:

ok well we had a section for that so i moved it there
dreads are as old as man..older in fact think about it our species and the species we evolved from had hair, not fur, the difference being that hair continues to grow and fur has a typical length without deviation much. so any animal with fur or hair long enough to dread would tend to dread
in the beginning we had no tools to cut comb or style hair so dreads were the norm.

flash forward to egypt when the comb is finally invented and some began to comb out theyre locks
however many pharoes (king tut for instance was known to have dreads) still wore locks perhaps to set themselves apart as holy god men

again in egypt in the time of moses the most devote jews (perhaps moses himself) would take the nazarene vow grow theyre locks and follow strict doers and practices. in the bible its written only te nazarene may speak directly to the devine (further implying moses had dreads) and may enter the promiced land.

throughout history many peoples wore dreads norse arabs scotts you name it dreads were part of most cultures

back to biblical refferences, jesus joseph john the baptist and samson were all known tio have dreads ?(jesus's dreads were to the ground)

further on we have the rastas who originaly started wearing locks to imitate the strength of the zulu warriors (the term dreadlocks is fairly new too) although rasta dreading has been traced to the zulu, today the wearrers of dreads in the rasta community are those who follow the nazarene way,the ital diet and the vow to never cut or comb the hair

im no historian though theres way more history i dont know
this is just the tip of the iceburg

How to convince your loved one?

Introduce Yourself

Sometimes it takes a while for loved ones to come around. Especially if they are conservative (like my family) or not accustomed to seeing dreadlocks on people (again, like my family). My husband was totally against it, but because I am doing it naturally, the change is gradual and he is getting used to it. He didn't think I was the "type" for dreads either. Just be true to yourself. If you really want to dread your hair and you are determined that it is for you, then eventually if this guy cares about you, he will come around. If not, and he just has a superficial reason for being with you, then like SE said, you'll unload him and eventually find someone who cares about you for what is on the "inside". Good Luck!!!

General Talk

I have SO wanted to home school my children. My 12 year old is very gifted. Usually a straight A student. He was bored all these years until this grade and is still kind of "bored" with school. However, my husband is really against it. He was raised by teachers, mother and stepfather both were teachers and administrators. He doesn't feel like I am "qualified" to teach our children. Really, I'm not the sharpest tack in the bunch, LOL, but from what I have heard, that shouldn't be a problem. I know a lot of parents who home school and if my youngest has problems, we may have to do that. However, my older son is a real social butterfly. He may not like being home. Plus, he's at that age - no girls to look at at home. :)

Not dread related, but my day looks better already....

General Talk

You know, this is just kind of random - but maybe it will lift someone else's day too. Up until this point, I was having a horrible morning. Raising a child with Autism is a daunting task, to say the least. I drug him crabby and irritable out of bed, force fed him, dressed him and drug him along to take his older brother to school. I spent my preschool parent/teacher conference blubbering over the fact that I never in my wildest dreams thought that I would be discussing whether or not one of my children would be able to cope in a "normal" classroom for kindergarden. After taking my son through the grocery store where I ended up chasing him instead of getting my shopping done, my morning concluded with reprimanding him for saying a man was fat (right in front of the "fat" man) and having to drag him out of the pet store kicking and screaming (all the time aware of the uncomfortable stares from others, not sure if it was because of the woman with the CRAZY hair dragging some kid screaming, the screaming itself, or BOTH)because I would not buy him a hamster ball (we don't have a hamster.) Enduring a hysterical crying tantrum behind me in the car all the way home, I made it in the house practically in tears wanting nothing more but peace and quiet and a glass of wine. All this by 1:00 in the EARLY afternoon. I have to say though, that after 5 minutes of being on the forum, my blood pressure dropped, I laughed at a couple of comments, forgot to get my wine, and actually dismissed my terrible, horrible, very bad morning (for those of you familiar with the book.) :P So, THANK YOU everyone on Dreadlocksite.com., for perking up my day, helping me to forget, and for keeping me sober!!! (Ha-Ha) I think I can face the afternoon now. Well, maybe ONE glass of wine....

Dreading methods and losing length????

Dreading Methods

Hey everyone! Just a quick question about a minor concern I have. Does it matter what dreading method you use in relation to the amount of length you lose during dreading??? Just wondering if the natural (no backcoming, etc.) method results in less length lost or if it all just evens up in the end. I am a little concerned that when my hair starts tightening up that I will lose a lot of length. I see on here where some people have said they have shortened up as much as two inches!!! My hair is not very long (just starting to brush my shoulders in back and on the sides and it is really curly.) it is also pretty layered (shorter in the back and underneath, longer on the top and sides), so when they start tightening, I don't want all these little short dreads all over my head!!! Any ideas on how this all might wash out???? Never have done any backcoming or anything to start.

SPREAD THE LOOOOOOOOVE :D

General Talk

I love getting up early in the morning while the sun is just starting to rise and seeing all the dew sparkle in the grass and on the flowers. I love the way the world looks after the first quiet snow, when it lays on the branches of the trees and covers everything lightly. I LOVE my coffee at 5:30 a.m. I love the clean way it smells after a rain. I love the smell of a clean old barn and the sound of a snorting horse. I love watching my children chase lightning bugs to put in jars. I love watching the bats fly around our fields. I love the smell of a campfire and a charcoal grill being lit. I love the peaceful, angelic faces on my children when they sleep. I love my family and I love that God has given me these blessings to enjoy everyday! Great post!!! Thanks for giving me a thankful moment in my hectic day!!!

O.K. - New update picture. Around 5"ish" months now. They actually appear to be getting curlier and really don't look like dreads to me. Sorry for the actual "file" pictures. Can't figure out how to get the actual photo to appear! LOL!
