Itchy!!!

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I did the same thing, just washed with baking soda. Needless to say my dandruff got RIDICULOUS. Now I usually wash with Dr. B's then ACV, then rinse with cold water. works like a charm Aaron"TheLegend" said:
But yeah I took a cold shower and my head isn't as itchy.

Painful cracks on the heels

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I have a backpacking book from the 70s that says washing your feet with alcohol will toughen them. Probably wanna do it after the cracks heal though (ouch!). Thought that would be useful knowing you like to go barefoot.

Is it just me?

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Yeah I hear alot of dumb stuff... like "you have to put poop in your hair to get dreadlocks". I tried to explain to the person that that is a Hindu ritual, and doesn't have anything to do with them locking! But I try to constantly remind myself that most of the time when people are making fun of something, they don't usually care about the truth, they just want to be mean spirited. And brother, I think that the more people "dread" your locks, the more that they are truly dreadlocks... : ) peace

How can I clean out (natural head)oil from my baby dreads?

Dread Maintenance

I use about 2-3 tbs of baking soda per 24 oz H2O... you'll probably need more water than me though. I've heard negative things about using lemon juice... 1.) one would think that it would attract bugs, bees and such, 2.) i've heard it can cause your hair to become lighter in color...(not neccessarily a negative but w/e).I've found that vinegar doesn't act like a conditioner in the 'store-bought' conditioner sense... I don't even use my dr. Bronners for shampoo anymore, I just use baking soda and vinegar. Depending on where you live, your water could be more basic like mine (I offset that with the acid in the vinegar :) ), or it could be more acidic, so you'd want to use more baking soda. It's not as hard to get used to not using traditional shampoo as you would think. It's been almost five months for me and I have it nearly down to a science, lol... no flakes!Hope that helps.

i need biblical references to dreadlocks my church kicked me out for wanting to dread

History and Religious Significance

I'd stay away from that church... lol. They would've kicked out all kinds of Biblical figures - - Moses, John the Baptist, Yeshua Christ, Samson... However they were Nazirites (well, except Moses) and from what I understand the Nazirite vow cannot be taken as the temple to which the vow is taken is destroyed... this is a Jewish perspective... however, if you believe that the temple of Christ transcends wood and stones then by all means take the vow!

Dreads (or just the pre-knotty 'dreadful hair) and jobs

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Yes, I live in the US... I actually just got a job with UPS recently and the boss has no problem with it. soaringeagle said:
never had a problem
but i usualy wotk for muself i hate bosses but the few ive had had no problems with dreads
its descrimination even without the religios implications its like firing you for not wearimng makeup or not plucking a unibrow
if they fire u otr state that they didnt hire u for that reason theyre opening themselves to a lawsuite
if u state a religios reason its open and shut case..unconstitutional (assumming your in america?)

Dreads (or just the pre-knotty 'dreadful hair) and jobs

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Just wondering if anyone here has either been fired, or been refused a job because of their hair? And what did you do about it? I've found stories online of people taking it to court on religious grounds and want to hear your story

Cutting by force.

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I would think that you could sue or something, especially if you have religious beliefs pertaining to your locks. But I consider what one does with their hair a genetic and human right, regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof. I don't think I would do anything to that person, they obviously believe in some outdated assumption of forced ownership of another person's body. I'd just let my hair keep on doing its nattiness, because if that person is sad enough to take on the burden of constantly clipping someone's hair because THEY don't like it, I would LET them. And they would have to do it frequently, because my hair grows fast, haha.

What to expect

General Questions

that makes sense, when my hair was about 4 or 5 inches last year (before cutting, errrgh) i didn't do anything to it for like a week, and i tried to comb... HURT SO BAD, my scalp actually hurt after, lol. big old knot had formed in the middle. and i had been using conditioner and all that junk. This was before I learned about the neglect method, and thought a white persons hair wouldn't dread. . And when you say to seperate the clumps SE, is that to prevent congos? Great site by the way! soaringeagle said:
3 inches is lil short still but u could get dreads although typicaly 6 inch is around when they form

well dont watch too closely just seperate clumps that try to join together
sounds like you'll dread fast especially when u gain more length

General Questions

my hair is curling up on the edges of my head, above the ears... kind of defying gravity, hahaha. hopefully i'll get a camera soon and show you guys whats going on. I can sort of deduce where the first dreads are going to start-on the top of my head. It's cool to watch what's going on up there, like it has a life of its own! And yeah, you're right spider feet, it is just now starting to section itself, with a few intrepid loops poking out of the main section. Peace Spider Feet said:
They'll generally start knotting from the middle, eventually some of the tips may curl in on themselves and become blunt tips. At 3 inches they are probably just starting to clump together and create the sections themselves. You should be noticing pretty soon that the hair that falls out on your pillow and in the shower wont be coming out anymore. It just takes a few knots in each to start making more knots, before you know it they will be tight dreads. I always hear it takes about 5 or 6 inches of hair for dreads but it seems like when just growing out your hair into dreads by the time it hits 5 inches you wont see it because it'll already be into it's shrinking.

Don't know what you mean by curl on edges....
