Cutting off parts of dreads?

They're about 1 year old, give or take a week or two Ok! I don't have an aloe plant, but i'll look for one. About how long do you think it'll take them to smooth out a bit, into more dread-looking? I agree, I think the loops like pretty cool xD but all of them like that in one spot masses up and gets not-fun :P

The front part of my head looks great, the dreads are forming nicelyBut, the back of my head is all messed up.... They look great for about the first half, then the last half it's all messed up and it looks really bad. I'm all for them being their natural self, but highschool is starting in only 2 weeks, and I really want them looking nice.So, I was thinking about just cutting off the last half of the dreads in the back. would it hurt the dreading process to just let them regrow in a nicer way? i know I could just comb out the last half and redo it, but I really don't want to go through that pain, and I don't have the time.Would it be an OK idea to just cut off the last half, straight off, and let it regrow and redread?Thanks!

Is this "Aloe Vera" safe for my hair?

I know that regular straight up aloe is like heaven for dreads.But i don't have an aloe plant. I do, though, have this gel in a bottle that's supposed to be 100% aloe vera. I just want to use it sometimes to keep my hair looking tidy for certain events.Ingredients:aloe vera gel, triethanolamine, tocopheryl acetate, carbomer, tetrasodium edta, DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, *plus stabilizers and preservatives to insure potency and efficacyI know it's not good to throw a bunch of chemical crap on my hair, but I don't know if any of those ingredients are just to gell it up or whatever.Would it be safe? thanks, bless.

I guess I carried it on a bit too long, haha.On the right side of my head, about 6 small thin dreads clumped together at the roots, and it made it's way up about 3/4ths of the dreads.Now, it's not even a dread- more like a big netted looking clump. I can fit half my hand under it. On top of this net, are the remains of the little dreads, sticking out about 2 inches. They're just mostly unknotted hair now, not really dreads.So how do I turn this back into seperate dreads? I'm all for them doing their own thing, but I would really appreciate it if I didn't have this clump sticking 5 inches out of my head all the time. I want them back to individuals.I've heard that taking little nail scissors and cutting a few hairs at a time till I can pull it apart works well? I'm just scared of one getting cut off all the way. Some have nothing under them after the net. It's far too knotted up to pull apart.Thanks

Oily, stringy dreads?

My dreads are nearing their first birthday! (whoo!!) And it's been a great journey so far.But, they've always been pretty oily and stringy looking, and it's been getting worse. I've always had dandruff, but that's seemed to get a bit worse too since the dreading begun.I wash my hair with unscented Dr. Bronners soap, probably once a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. If I wash them more will it help keep the oilyness down? It makes my hair look uber unattractive, and I think it's hurting the dreading process...So what can I do to keep the oils down? Is there anything to help with the dandruff, too?Also, I try to keep backcombing my dreads when I can. The middle on a lot of them are pretty tight, but the ends and roots (about the first and last 1/4) are always really loose. Should I stop backcombing and just let them be?Thanks!!

I'm always scared of mine falling out too 0.oI think, for me atleast, I'm scared because my roots feel really thin, and I think that the hair will eventually fall out.... I think the dread is just thicker because it's also full of hair that's fallen out, so it would normally be only as thick as what's at the root, but since the dread's so much thicker, it feels really thin. Hahah I don't think I'm making sense, but I just cleared it up for myself! Thanks! xD
