Stinky

General Questions

I agree. I had to change my washing habits when I starting dreading. I don't have oily skin at all so before I only washed my hair like once a month. Now I try really hard to wash with residue free shampoo once a week, 12 days at the most. I like doing it saturday or sunday morning early so I can let it hang loose and dry all day. Your scalp needs time to adjust to not being scrubbed constantly so be patient. I like to tell people that all you really need to have to have dreads is time.

Wet or dry?

General Questions

We did backcombing with my husbands hair back in July. I definately recommend doing it tightly. I watched a video last night on knotty boys site of how they do dreads and it was sick. My husbands dreads haven't fallen out at all... It also took 3 weeks for me to do his hair. My hands hurt so bad by the time we got done. I'm going to start my dreads soon, but I'm not going through all that work, I'm going to do a combo of natural and rip and tear. Good luck...-Den's Wifey

Introduce Yourself

Apparently you all saw the word "wax" and freaked out. It has been 3 years since I put anything in my hair other than BS/ACV and water. My dreads have more than tripled in length and are healthier than ever. People make mistakes in the beginning. Everyone does. Get off your high ass horses.

Alternative's to wax

Dread Maintenance

Yeah man dont sweat your fuzzies. I tie my hair back with a bandanna when I go out or go to work. It keeps your fuzzies hidden and out of your face. Just be patient. shaun saunders said:
i cant really just let mine go coz i have to go to school and work they dont mind as long as they look tidy but i got hair comin everywhere so just something that will pull the hairs back to look tidy'er

wow, what a bunch of impatient folk. If you want it done quick and neat go to a freakin' salon. Dreads takes MONTHS to YEARS to cultivate. i had fuzzies, too. Now they are getting long enough to start forming their own dreads- three years later. the more you "add" stuff and fuck with them the weaker they'll be and the longer it will take before you start locking your hair. You can mat it up with goop, crochetting, or rolling, but dreads grow from the roots. matted hair ain't dreadlocks in my book. dreads are the growth AFTER you mat, knot, tangle, braid, twist, or roll your hair.

but to each their own. so many ppl treat this like a fad.

share your dreading mistakes so others might avoid the same dreadlock mistakes you made

General Questions

The first time I started dreads I went to a supposed 'loctition.' She assured me that white people can do dreads the same as black people do. WRONG!! She started with shampooing, conditioning, then deep conditioning my hair. Then she did something called plating. She sectioned into 1 inch squares, then divided each section into 2 twists, then twisted the 2 twists together. After which she slathered each section with about a pound of gel and put me under a hairdryer. Her advice for maintenance included coating each plat with a new coat of gel and sitting under a hairdryer every night for a whole month. And did I mention she said I couldn't even get my hair wet for at least a month then I could get it wet but not wash it for probably a year. That crap lasted for about 3 weeks before my wife talked my into combing it out. Talk about stink. I learned my lesson real fast.
