I have reached my 10 month dread timeline, few are wrapped, I was wondering...

Introduce Yourself

When I had wraps in mine (they weren't in very long, mind you) they worked wonders for compressing/tightening the dread. In fact, my very first dread was started with the rest of my hair "undreaded" and after I wrapped it for a couple of weeks, it came out perfectly round and super tight! I think you'll be pleased with the results, but just taking one out to check is a good idea.Good luck!

Peyote sleeves are really cute; beads are always fun, too. Check out BeatleBabyGlassworks' glass dread beads : http://www.etsy.com/shop/beatlebabyglassworks?section_id=7028131 (she does custom work, too). My friend has very thick dreads and sometimes uses rings to decorate hers with; dread coils are VERY cool - here is a link to some of those: http://www.etsy.com/shop/giapet/search?search_query=dreadlock+coil&search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5158170&shopname=giapet

Introduce Yourself

Totally, well said. I went natural at first for a few months with nothing except for separation and curls due to naturally curly hair. Then, I twist & ripped some, but the knots came out completely in a short amount of time. I did a gentle backcomb and it was crazy for a week or so, so I wore hats alot and after a few months I have pretty much dreaded completely. I did try crochet once on a few of them, but I didn't like how tight they were afterwards so I've gone back to natural (mainly because when I palmrolled them with aloe vera, it took me close to 2 hours and my arms felt like they were going to fall off). So, yeah, anyway, its all a matter of personal preference, but the way I see it, if you are starting out dreads, they are going to grow out and the new growth won't be backcombed or t&r or anything, so whatever you do to start them (aside from dumping stuff on them that won't ever wash out) isn't going to ruin your hair forever.

General Talk

I got the same response when I said I was going to dread my hair! "So you are going to stop washing your hair?" LOL Well, I guess people who aren't ever exposed to dreads don't really know anything about them, but how do these things get started?

dreads feel soo different after getting maintenance done... :(

Dread Maintenance

Nah, it'll be fine! You only did it once; there's people who do it daily and worse stuff than that, I imagine. It might take a while, but it'll loosen up. The one I spent the most time crocheting stayed tigher than the rest for a while longer, so just be patient and it'll work out.

Dread Maintenance

Don't worry...I crocheted mine once, albeit more gently than someone else may have, and I ended up unhappy with how hard they got and how different they looked. I've done nothing for several months now, and they are all loose again with tons of zigzags. It seems to me that dreads are constantly evolving, and I'm sure if you leave yours alone for a while it will be just fine. : )

Flat, Xtra Loopy dreads & 60-75% Loss of Length???

General Questions

Mine sound so much like yours! I went natural for a few months, gentle backcomb once by my friend, and a little crochet once to round them out a little, but natural again for another few months...now I have flat dreads with tons of loops! I wear them back constantly because I don't like them in my face, and I'm also self-conscious and don't think they look as good as they did in the beginning. I'm glad you started this post!

people are cruel

General Talk

People are jerks, and I wish that wasn't the case. Just imagine a school full of dreadheads - then who would be the minority? : P
