Honey

Dread Maintenance

I had a recipe for dreads that called for a TSP of honey for about a pint - also included tea tree oil, aloe juice, salt, IIRC. I made it, and I really liked the way it calmed my hair down in the early days. I didn't have any problems with bees, stickiness, etc. In fact, my hair felt great, washed clean when I washed again, and the fly-aways were gone. That said, pure honey on the hair is not something I would try. A nice salt/honey facial scrub on the other hand...

project brainwash- how some sites convince you made dreads are better then grown dreads

General Talk

I think a really big thing to consider here when trying to engage Johnny in a debate (or any other person like him), is whether or not the debate/discussion will be effective. If both parties debate/discuss, get heated, and then walk away without ever really having considered "the other side", and all that's put out there is frustration, then the debate is not effective. Don't get me wrong, I believe in the power of debate; I just think that this *might* be a topic that holds very strong beliefs on both sides (for whatever reasons) and that therefore may not provide anyone listening or reading with truly good information. It is wonderful to hear that there is a facebook for non-wax. Perfect. The best way *I* can think of is to continue putting information on public, fast-paced, and popular sites (like this one, facebook, twitter, etc.).In fact, soaringeagle , I think you would be wonderful at twitter (great for short thoughts often). Doing something like that would, I believe, go much further than expending energy on Johnny Schlack or any of the other posterfolks for wax.

Howdy

Introduce Yourself

I saw a youtube on dreadlocktruth and had to check this place out. I have had nappy hair for a little over three months now, and I would literally have to be rejected from multiple employment opportunities that I would love for me to cut them.I feel like I am on some kind of control relinquishment quest, and (sorry to get spiritual here) I am closer to God (or whatever you want to call it) because of it. I'm in school for a teaching credential, single subject English (LOVE), and hope to work in a dual immersion program some day. Go bilingual education!I'm a mom, three year old keeps me on my toes when school doesn't.Added the stoic pumpkin patch picture...that's my girl.

What do you think??

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

I've used this before - it comes out rad; not too bright except in the sun, where it's WOW.

Things to help hair dread

Dread Maintenance

I used a salt water spray a LOT the first couple of months. I added tea tree and lavender oils. I still wash my hair less frequently, but I know some people wash every once a month, some every couple of days. A clean scalp and low oil build-up helps tighten.I soak in salt water in the tub. Big boxes of Kosher salt.If I wear a tam when my hair is wet, I have a lot more ripping I have to do to maintain. I do wear a tam sometimes, though, and it seems to help.Beads: I wore them a lot during the first three months. Just recently removed them all when a friend of mine did some dread up keep (she's had 'em twice, once patience method, once backcombed, the latest for about 5 years) said I didn't need them. I love my hair much more without beads, but I also think they look lovely on. I keep a peyote sleeve with a sea turtle on. It's purty.HTH

dreadheadhq dreadwax used once regretted forever never wax dreads

Dread Maintenance

Thanks for clarifying :). I have not had to use anything like this, but from what I read it is a big help. The hot hot water is what I also hear is awesome for helping remove. I have read too that you can't easily get ALL the wax out. The best hope is most. Knottysleeves said:
That's a deep-clean recipe and it's awesome for dissolving dirt and lint etc... but it won't actually remove wax. Wax takes a lot of hard work to remove and very, very, very hot water. :-)

Here's a recipe to remove wax that may work (I hear it's wonderful!). In fairness, I pulled it from a dread site that pulled it from another dread site ( http://dreadlocktruth.com/community/index.php?name=Forums&file=... ):

Grab a big bowl of warm water, or hot-ish if you can stand it. (as hot as possible)
Add 3/4 cup of baking soda,
8-9 drops of tea tree oil,
2 table spoons of lemon juice,
and 2 table spoons of sea salt,
stir and stir until it's dissolved.

Soak dreads in the bowl or use a squirt bottle or something similar to apply it to your scalp and dreads.

Grab a towel and wrap it around your head and leave it there for around half an hour, or more.

Rinse it out, really well. And that's it!

Good luck.
