Moved back to Memphis!

General Talk

Just a shout out to anyone around Memphis that wants to chill sometime.

I just went through a divorce and moved back home(ish) on Friday from Wichita and am hanging out with old friends but am also looking to meet some new ones!

Woot!

Dreadlock removal method

Dreading Methods

My wife had to take hers out last year after about 6 months because of a job that eventually screwed her over so she really shouldn't have done it in the first place. But it took her about an hour per dread and she conditioned alot and would rub it in really well when she did. She would also put olive oil in the dread before starting to comb it out with a metal flea comb. it hurt at times and it did damage her hair pretty bad. but its fine now and once she gets out of school and into a carrer (if it allows) she wants to grow dreads again.

Dread Maintenance

We just got Hemp tams @ spencer's where i work and i was wondering if hemp is good. I think I'm going to buy it this weekend unless i hear anything negative about it. Chuck R said:

Couple Questions and Comments

Dread Maintenance

thanks. i had thought about doing that next time.and i guess it is me just being paranoid about the sleep thing. Didjeridurian said:
When I do the Baking soda rinse I dont just stand in the shower. I can see that getting pretty boring. I just use a one gallon jar full of water to wet my hair as I lean over the shower or sink. Then I fill the jar with the baking soda mix and dump it over in the same fashion. I let the rinse drip out for a couple minutes and then put a towel over my back like a cape. The I just go and do my thing for a while. You know didj, guitar, comp work, meditate, whatever. Then I go and rinse it out in the shower and scrub the rest of me.
I think sleeping on them may appear to "set them back" in the beginning, but I am finding that as time goes on it is actually helping them knot.

Couple Questions and Comments

Dread Maintenance

First off on Saturday I tried SE's baking soda rinse, used a half gallon though and cut the ingredients in half because my hair isn't really that long. Standing in the shower for more than 10 minutes is REALLY boring so i only waited 10. Rinsed good, and then did a half gallon apple cider vinegar rinse (half ingredients again) let sit for 3 mins and rinsed. After gently towel drying it I went to the park from 11:30am to 7:00pm lol and just ran around enjoying my day off. They felt and smelled great!Which leads me to my random questions:1. Best drying method? Hair Dryer, towel, or drip dry?2. If using the baking soda rinse and the vinegar rinse, how often should I wash my dreads? Just once a week or if they just start to get sweaty and oily?3. I made a mix of rosemary tea, thyme tea, and a couple drops of tea tree oil that i spray on my dreads most mornings. Good thing? Bad thing? Or too much of a good thing?4. Since I started just leaving them alone (no rolling, back combing, gel, etc...) I love how they get as the day goes on, especially when the tips start to curl up and look nice on their own but after sleeping on them its like it sets me back again. So would getting a tam and sleeping in it be better or am i just being paranoid? lol

Chagrin Valley Soap and Shampoos

Dread Products

I wanted to share this site with everyone: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/products.htm My wife and I have been buying their products for about 2 years now. It is an older couple who makes natural soaps and shampoos WITHOUT SLS. They are basically essential oils, clays or muds, even coffee, and lye. But the way they cure their products the lye is completely absorbed and is not harsh at all! They produce a rich lather and really nice on your skin and hair. While I've enjoyed using their soaps and shampoos I wondered if any of the shampoos would be ok for dreads. Since many of them use olive oil as the base oil i know this would not be good for tightening if anything it might loosen dreads.I didn't know if some one might find this site useful, Ashley and I have tried over 10 different products from them and enjoyed them all.-Jamesp.s. this isn't meant as an advert for this site. Just sharing a site i think people might like and seeing if there is a shampoo or two that i can order from there for my dreads in progress.
