I'd say backcomb + wax..I notice how you said they look almost 'perfect', and how he went from not having dreads to having instant dreads.. Wax for sure.Plus, I've just noticed, that dread on the far right, you can tell its twisted at the top..., real dreads dont twist like that.. Because the wax is holding it like that. Plus they just have that overall dull / lifeless look that wax-locks have.

I waxed probably 3 times MAYBE 4 if you're lucky, in about a year..I didn't try all that much to remove it, because I saw it as a losing battle. People who try for weeks / months are very much in denial.. I tried a few hot rinses, and residue-free shampoos.. That's about all really..(in the video) those two dreads on my left hand side at the front tucked behind the others.. Those used to be one big fat 'wax-lock'.. We picked it apart and combed it out until i had straight hair, right? Fat chance. I was left with about 3-4 inches of shredded destroyed thin hair... So I sectioned it into two dreadlocks and just left it.. They locked better in 2 months than any of my others in a year.. So those were my only authentic dreads, I was sad about cutting them.. But now I have them forever :P

NOTE: This one was taken AFTER I cut into it.. See how it looks completely fine now? Also I apologise for the size, but they're uncompressed macro shots, because It was kinda hard to take a photo / video of the wax for some reason..

Yeah, okay... I just cut into the first 3 inches or so of one of my flatter ones.. (it was flat due to how the shape of the WAX moulded it!), I tried to take a video, but it couldn't focus, you couldn't really see anything.. So I settled with a few photos..What's interesting about this, is that I was able to roll it back up again after I cut it, and it looked identical and still very tight.. Which exactly proves my point.. The wax hardens together and you think you've got super tight locks.. But really you can just pull them apart.. In this case, its split right down the middle!Admittedly though, I did have to cut it to disect it, but that's because its been a freaking year, so that's a long time for wax to harden and what small amount of untouched hair I had in there, may have knotted around it..
