stinky dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Yah..they are usually dry within a couple hours. Unless I should be blow drying them or something to dry them quicker?

stinky dreads?

Dread Maintenance

Got out of the shower today, washed my dreads for the first time in about 4 days. Baking soda is what I use. Its been about two hours and they are starting to smell like the same smell when you leave your clothes in the washer for too long. I have noticed this the last couple times I washed them. But before that I don't think they ever smelled like this. I don't get them wet between washes. I would say I usually wash them once every 4 to 6 days.
Any idea what's going on with em?

Thank youu!

so why is everyone so hateful?

General Talk

Okay...So I am a year or so into this wonderful journey and I haven't had any bad experiences myself. But I'm searching thru tumblr just looking around and I am starting to see a lot of hate towards anyone who has dreadlocks who isn't black or rasta. Things like this "...white people wearing dreadlocks expresses our society's racism..." or "..So black people WILL lash out on you, and call you racist and appropriative. Because you are, you arent putting the effort into my peoples hair. You dont care enough to want to represent a hairstyle of my people correctly and its like youre mocking it, whether you intend to or not..."
There are so many more examples. I am doing my best to not get irate about this, but it is difficult. As human beings shouldn't we all share the same rights no matter who you are? That's what I thought but apparently there are a lot of people who think differently. Have you guys had any bad experiences like this personally? Also, do the majority of people think this way, that white folks with dreads are racist or whatever? And why do you guys think people get so hateful over this topic?
I figured I'd come to you guys to calm down rather than yell at someone over the internet (which gets you nowhere and would just make me look like a fool). Thanks for any and all input!!

Help! Save My Dreads

How neat! I have been trying to make it a point every couple weeks to check yahoo answers for questions about dreads, let them know what I know, and referring them to this amazing website!

Great idea SE! And glad to see so many people jumping in to spread the knowledge. (:

2 weeks into neglect, Dr. Bronners or BS rinse?

Dreading Methods

I haven't yet tried the bs/acv, but was thinking about it just to get a real good cleanse in there. But I have been doing the neglect for 5 months now and I will swear by Bronner's. I started with liquid at first, I think I tried eucalyptus [tho I don't think it matters which scent you get]. And at first, I thought it made my hair feel weird. We don't have hard water either, so I was thinking about stopping using it. But after a month or two I stopped noticing the difference and my hair feels smooth and soft and normal now. I think it just had to get used to the change in soap. Now that I have experimented a little with some of Bronner's different products I much prefer the bar soap. I feel that it lathers up easier than the liquid [tho they both lather just fine]. And so far I haven't had too much trouble with dandruff. [ I wash my hair once or twice a week now, at first I was doing 3 or 4 times a week] I do notice a tiny bit say if I scratch my head real rough, but other than that it's been smooth sailing! Good luck with whatever you decide!

How did you start your dreads? All in, did some tester dreads, did one dread first, etc?

Dreading Methods

I actually did a "test dread". Backcomb. Then 2 months later did another test backcomb dread. At the same time that I did the second test dread, I stopped brushing my hair. No more backcombing or doing any type of maintenance. I'm doing the rest all natural. I love the wildness look of it.

My scalp is kind of sore?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

yah i did stop after the 2 sections i backcombed. i did one section in april and one in june, since tho i have left the rest alone. i wasnt sore then (april or june), but am now. and yes, my hair isn't a whole lot heavier than it was before i started this. thats why i was kind of not sure what was up. i will try massaging it. that may relieve some irritation.

thanks.

My scalp is kind of sore?

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Hello all!

I stopped brushing my hair almost 3 months ago. I'm trying the natural way of dreading. I wash my hair once or twice a week with Bronner's [either bar or liquid] soap. I usually leave my hair down, unless I'm eating really is the only time I pull it back in a fairly loose ponytail. The last 2 or 3 weeks I have begun to notice a slight soreness of my scalp. Girls and guys with long hair might know this feeling [even before dreads]: like when you have your hair up in a tight ponytail all day and then when you let it down at the end of the night, your head and hair are kind of sore. I know hair can't be sore, but I'm sure someone out there knows what I'm talking about. I don't really notice it until I start moving my hair around with my hands. And I will feel this on almost a regular basis now, even though my hair is down almost 100% of the time.

Is this common? And why does it feel this way?

Thanks (:

One step forward, two steps back

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

hi there (:

Try cutting back on washing your hair slowly. I don't know if it works this way or not, but it seemed to for me...I washed everyday, then I stopped brushing.. Cut back to washing hair every 2 days, then every 3 days... Over the course of 2 months I worked up to 7 or 8 days without washing my hair. [lol i kind of lost count, i was mostly just being a lazy bum]

I know all hair types are different and this may not work for you. But it did for me, possibly worth a shot! Good luck!

Dr. Bronners question

Dread Maintenance

my hair is very thin and fine and when i started using non diluted bronners it made my hair feel the same way you described. but we do not have hard water. i continued using it, its been 3 months since i started using it, and my hair feels normal again. still not diluting it. and i love it. only thing i'm doing differently, is i stopped brushing my hair.
