What is a Hippie?

Alternative Lifestyles and Subcultures

that makes sense Didjeridurian thanks! the way i was looking at it, we have evolved to point we are now, so Im seeing a return to nature as a stripping away of those traits/habits or wrongful practices. I appreciate you. Didjeridurian said:
well I wouldnt say de-volution because I belive that we will truly eveolve WHEN we return to nature.
I would say more accurately de-adaptation to wrongful living.

nice, i was just reading about this not long ago because it kinda goes in line with a thought about the same thing, a return to natural man...a sort of "vouluntary de-volution"...

I just want to point out that the original "hippie" movement began wayy before tie-dye and and the Haight-Ashbury scene. Even before the beat generation and Neil Cassidy.
If you want to know about the real "hippies" check out the Lebensreform Naturmensch Movement from 19th century Germany. The were later dubbed the Nature boys from the work of eden ahbez.
Herman Hesse and his teacher Gusto Graser were part of the original movement in Germany along with the earliest Naturopaths like Adolph Just, Louis Kuhne, and Arnold Ehret. All the Naturmensch that migrated to Palm Springs in the late 1800s and early 20th century were raw food fruitarians that were part of the Lebensreform(life-reform) movement. They were largely nudists or wore "reform clothes". Bill Pester could be considered the Godfather of the hippie movement in California and he was the first of the nature boys who inspired a young eden ahbez to write the song nature boy which was later picked up and perforemd by Nat King Cole.
The Lebensreform was about a reform to natural man. They were nudists, strict vegetarians and raw foodists. They abstained from alchohol, tobacco, drugs, and medicine. Everything they did as part of their reform was to return to the natural state of health. The idea of nudism was not a political statement, it was based around the scientific fact that we cheat ourselves out of countless nourishments of the sun and air by covering our bodies so much. They believed that every ailment that plagued mankind was in direct consequence of a departure from nature. This is a quote from Dr. Arnold Ehret on that subject:

"The Garden of Eden was a fruit orchard- and man has been tricked thru a wrong civilization into unconscious suicide; reduced to slavery through producing wrong foods....Man is the sickest animal on earth in that no other animal has violated the laws of eating as much as man, and no other animal eats as wrongly as man."

Just FYI! lol

Hey everyone! I live part of the year in a tipi, have been for almost five years now, on a little organic homestead in new jersey (i know, i know)......its not for everyone, but from my own perspective i can say that it is one of the most satisfying experiences i have had...there is something really...ancient..about it, almost womblike..with the fire smoldering inside with you, tendrils of smoke wafting up out the top, it is a warmth that goes beyond the physical. i am working with other building methods on the farm...but i think i will always keep the tipi...
