Dread Maintenance

yes absolutely.. natural is always better because it is natural.. this is the place to take advice from people who have been down all routes and know the best solution. nobody here should have any sort of superior mentality... likwise, noone should feel inferior for any reason. we have all come to the forums for a reason.. to join on the path to righteousness and enlightenment.

.. then where is the patience that it takes to let them start on their own??

it is often so not the patience but the not knowing part, i also spent so many hours in backcombing and croching, and i done for free with a lot of love, as i thought that this was a natural way, i was such sure, because such common here, that it never came up to look at google
til the moment i noticed that my dreads are getting such thin, i knew something was wrong, took me stil a while till i asked meself that question, and at that moment SE came into my life with this dreadforum, seeeen
it was always clear to me that by much and curly hair it goes natural, but yes by my kind of hair such style that i acutally never had to use a comb anyway, seeen, i thought, that for dreads you have to help the nature

i cannot change the past, as i felt such unhappy that i backcombed and croched so many of my friends, but i can change the future, so that is why this forum and all of us is such important to reach and to pass on the right knowledge to those who wanting to become a dread

Dread Maintenance

GO TO YOUR LOCAL NURSERY AND BUY THE BIGGEST ALOE PLANT THEY HAVE!!THEN!..pull all the fat pieces out and cut them open on the sides so you can open it up flat.Take a spoon and scrape all of the meat and jelly and water out of the inside of the plant and into a blenderblend it upstrain it through an old t-shirt and then wrap up all of the solid material in the tshirt and twist it up into a ball and SQUEEZE all of the extra water out.Dump this on your locks and wrap them up in a bag or a towel for the day or for several hours anyway..Then rinse well.. your hair will suck up this love and it will repair the damage probably done to your scalp by "making" your dreads in the first place.never use wax or chemicals.. they are the enemy of dreadlocks..hope this helps you!!

Dread Maintenance

i mean it's not really that unfair to tell the truth.. it IS becoming a fad! it's really unfortunate that someone spent 12 hours doing damage to your hair folicles. dreading is natural and doesn't do any damage at all.. it just comes together. there is no such thing as "starting" and "maintaining" dreads.. both of those completely defeat the purpose. if you are committing your WHOLE LIFE to a hairstyle.. then where is the patience that it takes to let them start on their own?? well now as a new sister to this , i must say that i think it is unfair to say that because we have so many questions we are treating this as a fad, some of us are just unsure of how to start and maintain healthy dreads. i for one, after 3 people took 12 and a half hours to do my dreads, really don't want to fuck them up!!!! i thought very long and even harder before committing my life to my hair and i want to learn all i can! i think it is great that i can turn to a site like this where i will find folks that have made it through the "fuzzies" and such:)

i cant really just let mine go coz i have to go to school and work they dont mind as long as they look tidy but i got hair comin everywhere so just something that will pull the hairs back to look tidy'er

wow, what a bunch of impatient folk. If you want it done quick and neat go to a freakin' salon. Dreads takes MONTHS to YEARS to cultivate. i had fuzzies, too. Now they are getting long enough to start forming their own dreads- three years later. the more you "add" stuff and fuck with them the weaker they'll be and the longer it will take before you start locking your hair. You can mat it up with goop, crochetting, or rolling, but dreads grow from the roots. matted hair ain't dreadlocks in my book. dreads are the growth AFTER you mat, knot, tangle, braid, twist, or roll your hair.

but to each their own. so many ppl treat this like a fad.

i 100% agree with Jelly! Why do you have dreads if you are worried about how they look? that's so silly! Is anyone actually going to MAKE YOU take them out? If they have anything to say tell them its a natural process and if they have a problem with it then they can take it up with God. Really all of the effort that you have already put into them is just going to come out because dreading is it's OWN process that NEEDS to happen naturally... dreading really should not just be a hairstyle fad. why did you start locking your hair love? shaun saunders said:

Dread accessories

Dread Craft Show and Trade

I have never dyed my hair or anything, and I don't plan on it.. so its nice to decorate the crown of glory from time to time. I go through different phases where I tie all kinds of beads rocks shells and rings into my hair, but then sometimes I just want to see them in all their natural glory. I was wearing a $5000 ring in my hair once and didn't even know it!! I really love peyote stitches.. especially to cover and fix crazy loops. small artificial flowers and ribbons look really pretty when tied into dreads too!

Whats it like being a dready parent?

Dreads in the Family

When I go out by myself I always get double takes, so I'm always really worried about whether or not I will be taken seriously when I have to go out with my daughter, but I find that when I have her with me I get much more positive responses. She doesn't even have any hair.. but we laugh and giggle and coo at each other all over the place, and I really think that people see that more.It is really unfortunate that most elders who are supposed to be our teachers are so closed minded and mean. The younger generations are much more open and loving, and I hate to say it, but our old will not be here for much longer.. and with them will go old stagnant ideas of how society should be. There are many changes coming about and I think more people are looking others in the eyes and feeling their vibes whether they realize it or not!

to dread or not to dread, that is the question, things to concider before taking the plunge

General Questions

Very true! To each his own, but I really feel like dreads should be a slow natural process that forces the dreadie to develop with their changing locks. My grandmother tries to throw biblical passages at me telling me that i've ruined my hair.. that the bible says that my hair should be my crown of glory.. and i tell her IT IS! This is MY crown of glory. Not yours!..I find a lot of my family just thinks I'm some wing nut or the black sheep or something.. They're like.. oh.. there she goes again talking about outer space and shit.." My mema actually says to me all the time.. "You used to be so pretty!" They are all so attatched to systematic values.. you can't hold it against them though.. that is how they have been indoctrinated.Mostly I just get questions on how did I do that? Everyone thinks that you just dont wash it, and there is nothing farther from the truth! Washing my hair regularly helped it lock up faster once it started! I love my locks. They inspire me and remind me of my natural roots. Everytime.
