I Cut Them Off :(

Life Issues Facing Dreads

i see why u cut yours off and im not gonna give u any flck for that but if they said they couldnt hire you b/c they are a food buisisness they are liars cuz i work at pizza hut and ive had these dreads since they hired me the first time in 07 so i think they just didnt want u to realize tht they were discriminating against you for your dreads but realistically you are aloud 2 have dreads and work with food. i mean really everyone should wear at hat or helmet in restaurants and i personally think u loose less hair with dreads now if u were applying for like a waitress fancy restauraunt alot of ppl have wrong but opinionated opinions when it comes to dreads so maybe they just were ignorant but its sad that where you live is so damn close minded. sorry you had to see how ignorant some folks can be. but hey its hair and it grows bck and im sure once they see that your a hard worker they wont care how your hair looks. i mean my manager tells me all the time that he dont "get" my hair but he loves having me around cuz im one of the best workers that he has

is it normal for 1 month old backcombed dreads to not look like dreads?

Dread Maintenance

yes very normal. they tend to fall apart if u dont keep up with them too. once they actually turn into dreads which i mean matt together to where theyll stay like that after washing and all the good stuff then theyll look more like dreads.its all part of the process hun patience is ver necessry and dont get overwhelmed with how long it takes.

Washing- How long is to long?

Dread Maintenance

i think that once a month aint to bad. i wash when i feel like i need to. when my hair starts to feel like it sweaty or something. the less you wash though the less damp it is so once a month is prolly a good mold deterrant. like i ust make sure i was it no more than 1 time in like 9 days. sometimes ill go for like 3 wks without washing but i hat washing it b/ci hate having wet dreads for like 2days or more. thats why i like summer. cuz in the summer my hair drys faster cuz the sun and a wet shirt wont cause pnemonia. lol. as long as at some point u wash your hair i dont think the time span really matters. i mean u go to long ull end up being a flaky stinky sweat absorbed dready lady but besides that ur dreads would prolly be fine

Dreadlock thickness

Dread Maintenance

at 3 months they are still able to be brushed out. so what i would do it maybe wash and soak them in conditioner or theres this site called knotty boy and they have a dreadlock removal kit. its pretty much conditioner with aloe and all that stuff. but then u could slowly take a comb and pick them out starting at the ends heading up to the roots. very time consuming and youll definately need some help especially for the back ones. i did this once a long time ago and it took me a few day to take them all out. but then you can restaret them and make them as thin as you want but fyi if you make them too thin they may eventually start to thin so much at the root that they may start to break so dont go to thin. and just keep in mind that everyones hair is diffrent. like i have big and little dreads long and short ones but i have really thick hair so say if i had 50 dreads someone else who had the same thickness of dreads might only have like 40 or 30 cuz of the thickness of their hair. theres so many veriations. plus i backcombed mine so within time my dreads actually got skinnier the more that they dreaded up where other ppls might get thicker. but only having 18 does seem like you made them pretty fatbwhich the only thing that is wrong with that is that your unhappy with it. so id say think to yourself exactly how thick you would like them to be and just start from there because if you dread them up then take them out over nd over youll end up with dreads with a shitload of split ends which with dark hair even though u have dreads u can still tell theres split ends in them. so be easy and take your time with coming up with the right thickness for you.

General Questions

well ive had my hair for almost 5 yrs and they are about 5 inches above my butcrack long. i know tmi right. well i have a mix of thick and thin dreads. when i wash my hair though dude sometimes i could swear they feel like there about 30 lbs. just like a shit load of long sponges ya know. then it takes like 2 days to dry but i wouldnt shange them for the world. when their dry though they feel like their maybe 2 lbs but like i said their not short and my hair of course is alot thicker then it ever was before. despite the weight i love em so much that i would never cut them off

Scratching!

Introduce Yourself

patting works and the good news is once u have them for awhile they dont itch any more ive had mine for almost 5 years now and when mine get itchy i scratch them but i remember when i first started i itched like fucking crazy man. tea tree oil helps u can get anti itchstuff in the ethnic hair care isle. just becareful cuz too much tea tree could give you flakes and what not but id say itch away. cuz i backcombed and nothing keeps them absolutly perfect plus if they do fall apart <wich if you backcomb youll realize they take alot of maintenance that way> you can always touch up and/or fix

Have problems with your dreads and helmets?

Dread Accessories

we got my son a skateboard for xmas and hes 2 1/2 yrs old right but since he has shoulder length dreadlocks it makes it so his helmet size is bigger then it would normally be so instead of like a helmet for a 3yr old we had to get one for a 5yr old it still fit snug cuz of all his hair but its just right for him. i mean he doesnt have a big head its just the bulkiness of the dreads ya know. plus the helmet has the velcro on it where you put the padding on so you have a cushion between your head and the helmet and we havent had a problem with it yet but thnx for the idea of a skull cap or who knows maybe even a bandana just incase it ever does end up bothering him or if we ever loose one of those cushions and the velcro is exposed cuz velcro and dreads do not mix well my friend, owie

Dreading Methods

you gotta do the best way for you. just because you read what someone else does doesnt mean its the best. i love this site and the ppl on it but everything they say on here i havent done. i mean i back combed and even in the beginning of my dreads i used wax and palmrolled. now did my hair fall out or are my dreads ruined. not in the least i always get compliments and ive had them for about 5 years and they arent even thinning or molding. to me its all in moderation. just b/c you do one thing diffrently doesnt mean your right or wrong its just diffrent and just like the neglect method works for alot of ppl on here definately doesnt mean its the right way, it was just the right way for them. and i bet you theres more ppl on here that didnt do it all natural, neglect then anyone knows. now with the not wshing thing im with you and im not totally 100% believing that she never washed her dreads cuz the smell alone on top of all the scalp builup would leave her hair flaky wouldnt you think. but im not her and only she knows what she really does
