TIE-DYING!

General Talk

http://www.dharmatrading.com/ when i was tie dying there was no digital camera or even computers. we had polaroids and that was very modern indeed. im kinda over it. but its fun and sloppy so pleaes enjoy yourself! i love to join in your enthusiasm at least. so i m passing on a brilliant resource. i have used this company linked here for almost 30 yrs in my art which is primarily mixed media in stitchery *though not tie-die* and they are arguably the leading authority on tie dye goods- this is a highly consciensous company, a leader in that vein but warning - not all of their products are 100% organic but many are and they are all clearly labled which is which. they even have a line of hemp goods and natural dyes. its huge selection will mind boggle you in every dept. and total instructions are given. they LOVE their work - they're old dead heads. they practically started the idea of making tie dye to sell on tours. so enjoy!

How to take steps towards eating healthy?

Dreads and Diets

hey Khanka im going to hook u up with a source of healthy eating- a raw foodie ezine that is happens to be featuring my art this month. the editor is a black woman and she is soooooooooo into the raw diet shes got her aunts and uncles on it too.. so check out divinerevolutionmag.com its free its an ezine. she has a e-recipe book coming out soon im sure it will cost some small thing but less than a paper book. im not raw i think that might be too hard for you too to go all the way in one leap to that. but Asante at divinerevolution is absolutely gloriously inspiring ! and its fast and easy to incorporate some raw features into your existing diet. like sprouts and more dark green salads, hummous, coconut milk and kombucha... fruits and veg raw as you say you like.i am vegan and i recommend vegetarian at minimum and vegan if you can give up the macaroni and cheese with cheese substitutes at least at first. there is good vegan cheese out there but its mainly soy and you gotta be careful to not overdo the soy its hard to digest if you do it for years it messes with you. meat substitutes are mainly soy too. but SE is right - its fine to start with that and then after you get death products out of your system, you will not want fake soy meats or even want portabellos done up like steak with onions anymore. i cant tolearate the smell or look of meat and fake meat is equally ikky to me. so use it to transition, but dont be dependant on it, use beans of all kinds, lentils etc and chickpeas. hommus and sprouted are raw or soak and cook the beans like chili, on pasta, indian dal, stew w veggies, mexican, there are a million things you can make with beans. recipes are free online in blogs you probably never need to pay for a book.and use the same spices you would use in soul cooking and condiments and doctor up that fake chicken - this will go a long way to make you not feel deprived of what everyone else is eating. barbeque can be healthy if its not meat but fried anything even veggies will kill you.

sooooo... my dad confronted me...

General Questions

im a big believer in meeting pp where they're at. in other words -find a common ground. SE had a good point. bob marley never woulda set foot in a salon. regardless of whether you are trying to emulate this icon or that your dad knows this one and seems to respect the marley... start with that. tell him you are learning patience with this and yes i agree with sam too - dont be a dick yourself. show your maturity on this and he will respect you better for your choices. be strong! beam love to him behind his back when hes off guard and not looking, this really works! and also when you talk with him eye to eye. sending love your way and directing to your dad. suddenly he will be like : what came over him? you will see a change, hes all love and respect and tolerance. it works. try it. and the tam idea rocks too! get him to buy you a tam if he wants to be supportive!

Anyone who is interested in learning how to prepare raw vegan food, please read.

Dreads and Diets

hi JD i been vegetarian over 35 (gulp) years and vegan since 1998. i been at this way of life so long i take it for granted and dont even think about it. i was only 11 when i won the battle with my folks about 'not eating death' as i called it. this was partly because at that time i moved int with my grandfolks who were old europeasants and ate meat 2 or 3 times a week out of economic reasons. it always amazes me that people think that eating veg or vegan is expensive. we did it because we were poor. my grandmother was delighted i wasnt going to be eating meat! meat is expensive! and its the packaged unwhole unwholesome products they are selling in the health food stores that make you less healthy and gain weight even. just eat whole and simple. its that easy. you cant just substitute tofu for everything its overprocessed and has been found to damage digestive systems when eaten excessively. beans beans beans! lots of kinds and endless ways. also as the non-dominant cooker if you live with your folks you can make sprouts as a protien - get your mom to buy them theyre way cheaper than meat take the initiative and rinse them daily and eat them in salads with dark green leefys cooked or uncooked greens. dont forget pnut butter, all nuts and also corn meal like polenta is protien. juicing is great too if you have a juicer and add spirolina or green superfoods to it. these are important to a growing 15 yr old for isntance or anyone to keep your protien levels and not get iron deficient. you could also try a new hobby - making a culture for some kombucha tea. they are sold online in 2s - one jar each house for you JD. its so much fun to make and in summer esp i love it for keeping my energy up and digestion healthy and immune system. well thats a start.. there is a good raw site called raw-wisdom.com with tons of information. i just saw a free downloadable food buying guide on naturalnews.com site and lots of vegan blogs one called hungryhungryvegano.blogspot.com they talk alot about how economical it is to go vegan! good luck! i already leave the meat out of every meal :) but im only 15 so im stuck here for another three years at least. my mom is really supportive of everything i do its just she would have a hard time buying meals for me and my parents are divorced so i go back and forth between houses throughout the week so that would make it EXTREMELY hard to fix meals at different houses. but when i move out im becoming vegan fa show!

share your dreading mistakes so others might avoid the same dreadlock mistakes you made

General Questions

hey anubis- the woman in the himalayas who started mine off from my long hair did that thing with the thread and sewed them - it was horrible. like training wheels on dreds. i kept pulling the threads out as i found them. she did alot of weird shit to my hair but hey how else do you get hair down to your butt started off locking up if you dont do something drastic to keep it from being one big rat ball. Anubis said:
As soon as I stop getting...."So you don't wash?" Then I'll start pointing and laughing at the really bad mistakes. Until then I'll be understanding that there is a lot of bad info out there and help educate.

An interesting way of forming dreads that I almost forgot about, similar to using wraps, is either start with a light tnr or backcomb. Then you take thread and kind of sew them to form them. Similar to how ancient egyptians had their hair styled before they began wearing dreadlocked wigs. =D

I believe this is also how Angelina Jolie had her hair styled in gone in 60 seconds.

Whats it like being a dready parent?

Dreads in the Family

zyn that school policy sounds like a direct negation of some peoples human rights by presumtion that all human hair is combable. but agree you dont want to send your kid into an environment where this is an issue making negativity around him.
