Dreadlocks liberate us from the burdensome vanity of conventional culture. By allowing our hair to naturally become what it will become without the time wasting practices and harmful chemicals from "styling" we give our hair the freedom to be its strongest and healthiest it can be.A fruitarian diet; that is a diet consisting of at least 90% sweet fruit (by calorie) and at least one pound of leafy greens per day, is the same type of liberation for our bodies. When we honor our physiology and anatomy, we eat what nature provided for us in the form it was provided. Raw, fresh, ripe, organic fruits and young tender raw green vegetables are the elixir of vibrant life. We are liberated from the modern culinary complexities that waste our time and heavily tax our many bodily systems.Foods that are processed, cooked, refined, seasoned, and/or salted are like hair that has been brushed, treated, permed, hairsprayed, moussed, curled, and/or ironed.Natural hair, natural diets, natural joy; freedom.

This is especially directed to the Rainbow Family who I believe has a strong presence on this site. I am sure those gathering would be a wonderful place to explore such possibilities, find connections, and directions...

Pilgrimage to the Heart of Nature: Suggestions/Support

General Talk

Hello Everyone,My the site has really exploded! Awesome work SE and all the admins. Many of the original members know me and are somewhat familiar with my work and my philosophies. I am about to set out on a brand new venture that is very much in alignment with the foundation of this website. I have given up all non-essential material possessions and am accepting a call to service. As I continue to pursue my Naturopathic Doctorate, I will be setting out by bicycle on an indefinite trans-continental journey to gather informative perspectives from a variety of conscious groups and individuals and spread the philosophies of natural reform. I will be on bicycle and staying out in nature while I uncover the powerful but often overlooked pockets of awareness to establish a new understanding of a practical and expedient "return to nature". My focus is of course diet, lifestyle, community, fitness, agriculture, spiritual integration, etc. As I travel the Americas I will be visiting natural health centers, retreats, studios, "gurus", "masters", yogis, doctors, gatherings, events, workshops, shaman, and beyond. The whole project will be documented and published weekly (at least) through my new website. The website is a magazine format and includes an abundance of information and entertainment including hours of real life, real time footage of my journeys. The site and the journey itself runs on a small membership fee of less than 10$ per month or 60$ for a lifetime subscription. I will also be uploading plenty of free info as well but the journey cannot continue without contributions from interested participants. Since I have taken a vow of poverty as part of my service, all profits raised each month that exceed the neccessary amount for the journey will go directly to www.FarmSanctuary.org to assist in the rescue, rehab, and placemnt of factory farmed and abused farm animals. This particular post, however, is not just a promotion for the site. I know that there are so many unique and interesting people on this site from all over the world. I am accepting any suggestions for places to add to my journey. If you know of a person, place, site, or event that you think would be a good fit please let me know. The website is

discouraged.

Dread Maintenance

sounds like you are over stimulatiing your hair. You are using ALOT of oil from your description. Your scalp will feel overwhelemed and pruduce oils to resist it. Much in the same way as stimulating foods force the body to create mucus to defend the soft tissues. I would relax on all the washing and sinsing, spraying etc. Your hair looks like mine did only oily. Just do a baking soda only rinse once or twice a week at the most and relax for a while. If it is causing to much anxiety just backcomb them already. Going natural is not just a choice of hairstyle. It is accepting a way of being. Its not natural to continually attack your head with substances to manipulate it into doing what you want when you want it."Mighty Oaks from tiny acorns grow" ...just not overnight

General Talk

Hey Everybody...
Site is blowing up I see. I feel I should reintroduce myself...
The originals know who I am but I took quite a hiatus for some personal issue and feel a bit like I owe an explanation for such a leave of absence. Without getting too in depth I faced some serious inner conflict and it forced me into some major life changes. I sold my "raw food" cafe, released myself and my ex-wife (still good friend) from the convoluted bonds of marriage, and finally abandoned my illusory attachment to the automobile,
I have enrolled in school to pursue my dual PhD in Holistic Nutrition and Health and natural Healing and my license as a HygioPhysician (Natural Hygiene Naturopath). I took a job as manager of a local health food store and vegetable co-op. I also began a program for teens to understand the importance of a natural living philosophy for their personal freedom and the realization of their full physical mental and spiritual potential. I also hold workshops at elementary schools to explain the simple reality of real fresh plant food to young children by illustrating the journey of food as it goes from the ground to the table.
I couldn't excuse myself any longer for contributing to the needless destruction derrived from my personal dependence on a car. I make my way around on my bicycle and work with a local bike co-op to promote the use of public transit and pedal power. I ride at least 300 miles per week as part of my day to day ventures.
As you can see all of this kept me quite busy.
More to the point... I have been allowing my hair to dread for about 8months now. I started the by very lightly backcombing them (VERY lighty, took about 45 mins to an hour for the whole head) and of course they unraveled one by one very shortly after. Since then I just let them do what they do and they are coming along just fine. The ones that are formed are full of great little twists turns and bumps. There is still quite a bit of loose hair but I am in no hurry. I love watching it evolve.
I don't have any interest in keeping it "neat" or tight so my interaction in the forums is limited to advising people to accept the natural process as a tool for personal growth and expansion. I also love the non hair issues that tend to arise from the interactions of free thinking individuals of all backgrounds.
Anyway its great to be back.
BLESSINGS SE you're doing an amazing job!

Have I ruined my dreadlocks?

Dread Maintenance

In nature, when parts of organisms are damaged beyond practical restoration, they are removed and grow back as long as regeneration of that part is possible. You could probably do all these complicated messy things or just cut the out and let them grow back. Now that you have learned what not to do you can be sure to have healthy natural beautiful dreads the next go around. Probably an unpopular suggestion but just my advice.

Partial Dreads

Dreading Methods

I guess I technically have partial dreads by your definition. My hair is dreading naturally so some of it is still just hair. In a year or two I might not have any straight hair left but who knows. Maybe some of it will take years to dread and maybe a small amount will never dread. Whats important to me is that it does what it wants to do and the outcome will be unique and wonderful
