The Social haters of dreads

General Talk

I can't imagine how hard it must be dreading in school, but remember - people take the piss regardless - if they didn't have your choice in hairstyle to poke fun at they would just choose something else.At least at the end of the day you can go home smiling, thinking about how you are the person you want to be who doesn't abide by the bizarre restrictions created by society. Can you imagine how dull life must be to be so mundane you have to put people down for your own pleasure?

Patience

General Talk

Soldier on man! I was the same for a long time, luckily when I started out I was in a stage of social hibernation so it was just myself and not others to contend with. I just found that one day, out of the blue I felt my head and was like "this isn't hair anymore..." and they looked well good.

Dread Dissection (after dread wax use)

Dread Products

Thanks to myself and my house mate I have two examples of previously waxed dreads to dissect. My house mate cut her dreads to shoulder length after realising they were getting inconvenient being down to her ass and I cut 3 of mine off so that I can get a tattoo where they were. Hers were waxed for 4 years (and no they weren't removed because of the condition of them, they have not been particularly weakened, the only weak dreads were the ones she regularly bleached, though admittedly they are a little icky on close inspection) she stopped waxing them about 3 months ago when I weaned her on to aloe vera. Mine were waxed originally for about 5 months because I too didn't know any better, but have had no further wax on them since June last year and I made attempts at wax removal. (Which clearly didn't work too well)I'm posting this for interests sake only and would appreciate if people would refrain from insisting that I should restart mine or criticising them or anything like that.I'm yet to take pictures of them because I don't have a camera, but I'm working on it, so watch this space. The more people show interest in wanting to see pictures the harder I will try, sadly I'm not a highly motivated person.

3 week back combed. any tips/suggestions?

General Questions

Yeah in the early stages mine were similar only my hair is very curly, I don't have any photos but they were basically lengths of fluffy hair that didn't seem to understand what was going on. I still liked them though! Most of the loops and lumps formed in mine as they were tightening in the later stages, I still have a lot of zig-zag locks and lumps and bumps everywhere, which I love because I just dyed my hair like fire and it looks awesome with the crazy directions they go in.You might be surprised how soon they start seeming like real dreads, it suddenly happened at about 7 months for me. But trust me you will love them no matter what they do! ratcakie said:

General Talk

Thats awesome, some of the people you least expect compliment dreads!I was in a supermarket a few months ago, wearing purple 3 quarter length shorts, some kind of floaty top and my CND converse and a guy was waiting by the pharmacy section with his 5 year old daughter, he looked very rough, knew most of the staff by name and was waiting to go into the little private room so I assumed he was probably going to take his methadone. (I know that seems judgemental but I'm pretty sure he was - respect to the guy for taking that route)Anyway, his daughter said something about my hair so he explained that they were dreadlocks and told her what they were (in a nice way), I smiled and he said 'excuse me love, no offence, but you look like an eco-warrior', I thanked him and told him that I wasn't offended. He said that he used to be like that too when he was younger. It made me pretty happy, seemed like such a lovely guy.

Glad I'm not the only one! It was bizarre because even in my dream I just couldn't understand how they could fall out so easily, but I ran my dream fingers through my dream hair and it all seemed so real. Scary biscuits.I love dreams, they're so bizarre. I think we should turn this thread into somewhere people can tell us about their strange dreams. The other night I had a dream where I was in a hotel somewhere, there was some sort of evil fascist convention going on and some kind of conspiracy was going down so I was running around to find a way to stop them while trying to avoid them. Luckily there were tunnels everywhere for the 'servants' to use but occasionally they melded into the main part of the hotel. I found that my mum had been turned into a candle in the shape of Santa Clause, she could still speak to me and gave advice on what to do but her face started melting because the candle was lit, so I blew out the candle and tried to reform her face but she couldn't speak to me any more. (When I woke up I worked out that the candle probably had to be lit in order for her to speak) I also found that my cousin had been turned into a tiny brass statue about the size of a toy soldier. I realised that they needed to be kept cold in order for me to save them so I left my mum in a sink full of cold water in my hotel room.I realised that throughout my entire dream some David Bowie lyrics (ones I presumably had made up) were going through my head, something to the effect of bringing you back to life. So I realised that I had to take my cousin to the Gig which was going on nearby in order for Bowie to bring her back to life and turn her back to her normal size. I also realised that if I gather enough brass statues (for some reason there were many) I could form a rebellion to stop the conspiracy, so I picked up as many tiny brass soldiers and knights as I could, squashed them all into a shot glass full of ice and had to carry them around in my mouth so as not to be seen by the conspirators. I was making my way out of the hotel when I woke up. So I never did get to meet Bowie or see the outcome.

General Talk

I had a dream last night that I mindlessly washed my hair with conditioner and brushed it without noticing and all my dreads fell out into my natural hair again. I was horrified but felt a little better when I realised I could start again naturally and avoid all the mistakes I made last time like waxing to begin with.I was so relieved when I woke up to realise my babies were still in tact.

Question about dread wrapping

Dread Maintenance

The only downside I have found to leaving a wrap in permanently (well for a few months) is that when I removed it the new growth at the roots hadn't started to lock as much as the rest of them, I now have a four dreads which are very loose at the roots because the hair couldn't move around enough to lock. Its not that bad though.
