When Washing for Neglect Dreadlocks Help PLEASE

General Questions

What he's actually recommending is that you wash your hair in the same direction ( or directions) that it grows to promote knotting. I'm not sure what the science is around it, but if it makes you feel better then go with it. Personally I wash my hair pretty much the same exact way that I used to.

In the long run, you'll find that you'll get more knots on the days that you're not expecting any. Throw on a tam and live. That's the best way to help knots form.

Dreadlocking with a perm

Dreading Methods

It can be done, and for exhibit 'A' I have a timeline of one up to 13 months:

http://dreadlocktruth.com/dtforum/30/5778

However, if I'm not mistaken the guy in question (who's timeline I just posted) had a fair amount of problems with breakage, and it took a good 9 months or so to see any real progress (my personal opinion). After having had a perm before, I can see the benefit to a light perm (or at least what the benefit should be) but I think the risk is just too much. A few minutes too long and half of your hair ( if not more, I'm speaking from personal experience) could all just break off and fall out. My last perm left me looking like a poorly groomed poodle, and if you were to touch my hair, you would see that the 'volume' was just from the massive curls... in reality over half of my hair was so badly fried that it broke off. It felt like I was wearing a really bad wig on top of a buzz cut (if that makes any sense). Instead, if you're looking for a good bit of framework early on, I'd recommend twist and rip.... then again, I'm moderately biased.

hair wrap Help.

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

As it states in the forum post, it was only temporary and done for a bit of extra length. Others even discuss using human hair extensions or kanekalon to do the same thing but with more long term wear. The wool certainly isn't something you'd want to keep around long term.

i would not do it with wool extentions just do the wraps and once your past the dread length your still wrapping the extra hemp or thread that your using since u might use 20 threads foer a multicolor wrap but u only use 1 or 2 at a time u still have 18 inside the wrap and once your past the dread you just wrap round those 18

hair wrap Help.

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

It's Slang!! Those are actually the product of a sort of art project... most of the length is from wool extensions and that's why they're wrapped like that. I can see if I can find the post where she explains how to do it... give me a second... http://dreadlocktruth.com/dtforum/4/1774?start=10 There you are! She explains the entire process in detail with pictures and further text instructions. Have fun!

as dreads mature and smooth out, do they get thinner or thicker?

Introduce Yourself

Mine thickened out A LOT. The only ones that didn't I combined to save them in the long run ( didn't wanting the roots to thin out too much and lose a dread or two!). And I've hardly seen any 'smoothing' at all as mine have matured... as a matter of fact, I have a number of dreads that dread up in a zig zag pattern...

Head and shoulders shampoo question.

Dread Products

I personally love H&S (regardless of the nay-sayers) and the way I look at it, if it caused your hair to knot up pre- dreads, then it's just fine for dreads even if you're going the neglect route. Though to save on shampoo, and to make it easier to rinse out, make sure that you're diluting it in water just like you would the bs mix.

ripping congos: will it get better

Dread Maintenance

At first, I too had to separate like mad... then as I started approaching 6-8 months, I didn't need to very often anymore... then I decided to force two to congo, and from there there's been minimal separation. I just make sure to go through each one every few days and make sure I don't get mega congos at the root...as those could be really painful to separate. It'll get better I'm sure! But it's hard for any of us to say exactly when.

My roots will not matt!

General Questions

I think they look just fine for having been done in May of this year! Just leave them be and keep them squeaky clean, and you shouldn't have any problems. I seriously wouldn't let anyone (including yourself!) muss with them from now on though... just leave them to their own devices and watch the magic happen. It's a trip!

The ends of some of my dreads are forming large balls....what's up???????

Introduce Yourself

I have them all over my head! Most of mine are really just loops that have formed on top of other loops... so now the ends of some of my dreads look like those knotted chinese good luck ornaments! I find the older they get, the more compressed they become, but they don't show many signs of disappearing anytime soon! I've even tried wrapping them and compressing them into a more cylindrical shape, but to no avail... just learn to love them! It's the best advice for most dread related issues!

Backcombed dreads!??!? are they dooooomed!?

Introduce Yourself

I started with t&r, but since I ended up with a fair amount of loose hair around one of my ears, I backcombed a little dread right over my left ear. I'm actually really impressed with how it's developing as opposed to how my t&r dreads developed. Honestly, I think you'll be just fine. If they unravel a bit, then let them! Those will probably end up being the best looking dreads on your entire head. Be confident with what you're doing and roll with it! From here on out just keep them clean, and watch the journey unfold before your eyes!
