Section Sizes and Size of Dreads.

General Talk

fred.nickler:

Hey everyone,

I have had my dreads for 1 week now, but the last couple of days (especially today) have been tough, I'm not happy at all with them and even had thoughts of cutting them off!! Well, It wasn't a very good for me.

Background: I got them done by a person, who is supposed to be trained in making dreads, and paid to get them done.

PROBLEMS:

1) SECTIONS: Apparently for unknown reasons she divided the head into a uniform grid rather than a bricklayer kind of thing and the result is there is a lot of white spots where the scalp can be seen.

Will this problem be minimised in the future once the locks get fatter?

2) SIZE: I think the sections are too big. I haven't measured them, but I think they are 1 1/2 inch and the dreads are too thin at the moment. With sections this large, I expected the dreads to be fatter from the beginning. I have 33 dreads now, but thought would have a few more as I seemed to have a lot of hair.

Will the dreads thicken up to roughly the size of the sections? If so, how would they thicken if the hair is already trapped into the dread?

When you look at my head, there are a lot more sections than dreads, you know?! I was expecting that the dreads would cover a lot more area, rather than having all these sections and scalp visible. Is this normal at the beginning???

Please, share your thoughts.

I have been wanting dreads for AGES really, maybe 20 years and now I'm feeling so bummed and sad that I'm not even enjoying them anymore. It is a disaster!!

Thanks.

Tara, it was a combination of things. I didn't like the size of them for one. My gf didn't like them ( which shouldn't have mattered) lol I actually ended up cutting them on a drunken night I've regretted it since.

I'm thinking of taking the dread plunge again. I found a "dread drawer"(dread accessories) at my parents house and it made me want to take the journey again. My hair is currently very short #3 against the grain (for My people with clipper knowledge) so it's going to be a while. Just wanted some encouragement from the dreaddy community. It's been a while and the site looks a lot different I'm excited!

Not sure if my dreads are even growing?

Help! Save My Dreads

are you for sure they arent growing? I've never heard of someones hair not growing. Are you loosing your hair (genetics) are you shedding a lot.How is your diet? Dreads are different until they get longer and heavier they don't show length. My hair seems very short until I wash them the. They areWet and heavy and I can shake them and they actually move. But.. Reality sets in and they dry and Matt back Down..I wouldnt worry about it.. I'm sure your fine... Just forget about them.. A watched pot never boils... Keep this in mind. Happy dreading

The easiest way to get beads on?

Dread Products

What I do is attatch a crochet hook to the bottom of your dread.. Then feed the dread up the base of the crochet hook until you get it on the dreadlock.. This way you are able to control the way the bead hole is.

I had a bit of trouble putting g beads on. mine are very very new so i debt know if this would apply to you but i found twisting the dread to make it tighter, then twisting the bead itself around the dread continually spinning it as you move it up its alto easier :) i like this thread idea but gonna have to try that!

Acv will help clarify as well.. I only like to use bsAnd the acv about once a month I think it leavesMy hair dry. So I use a more traditional shampoo.I assume there are residues being left behind so IDo a deep clean with the bs and a acv rinse

am i on the right track??? how do they look

Dread Maintenance

With your hair being so short. You want to use a light moisturizer.to keep your parts you'll want to twist and rip the ones that become undone (or put rubber bands on them not to snug though they should be able to move freely).Any shampoo that you use should be in a sPray bottle and diluted just be very light wash your scalp. Du rags are good to sleep in.

Retwisting Really Isn't Necessary

General Talk

It's simply a way of combing/brushing your hair... Think about it... Un-dreadedHair is brushed and or combed. Then you get dreads and you twist, crochet, interlock ect.Once you let go of the ritual you get rid of the problem causing habits that damage our hair.
