Help me, i have no idea what im doing

General Questions

You have African textured, coarse, curly hair brotha.. you are throwing your money away to complicate a process that requires next to no effort man.. Find a good shampoo that will rinse completely from your hair in hard water, toss the comb and conditioner, and allow your hair to work for you instead of draining your wallet giving money to people who intentionally impede the progress of your locks so that they can capitalize on and exploit you.. stop twisting, stop going to the "dread salon," stop using harsh, toxic, counter-productive methods/hair care products/advice.. be patient, because anyone I have talked to regrets the insta-dread/designer dread look..shit's weak man.. sorry man, have to keep it real.. peace brotha and good luck

Dread Maintenance

Howdy btother.. I would, perhaps, try rinsing with purified/spring water a few times.. don't use any soap; simply rinse it 2 or 3 times to try to remove the stubborn residue.. that would be my best advice k nnn, nnnnnnnnn

A few questions.

Thanks breddah.. I had a suspicion that T-gel would be, perhaps, chemically bad because the active ingredient is coal tar but I haven't found a better alternative.. I will definitely try the teatree rosemary shampoo..

A few questions.

Introduce Yourself

Welcome breddah.. First, good luck in your dread journey.. Soaring Eagle is right though (as he often is), one should not use rubber bands at any point; they will thin out an area of your lock at some point and render it frail and likely to break.. In my experience with shampoo/washing/etc, Dr. Bronners is a great catalyst initially but you do want to dilute the soap and, if you have hard water, use purified water to ensure the soap is completely washed out.. After about a year I found Dr. Bronners to be a little too aggressive however.. As your hair gets longer the soap inevitably becomes more difficult to remove completely and avoid residue build-up.. I personally have found Neutragena T-gel an excellent alternative and easy to wash out even with hard water.. T-gel also combats dandruff and build-up..In addition to those obvious benefits, it smells wonderful and can be found in almost any store.. My hair texture is African so I'm not sure of any disparities between African and Caucasian and the impact T-gel would have on fine, straight hair but give it a try.. I have been very satisfied.. Again, good luck brother.. P.S. - I would stop "T n R" and use the "natural/neglect" method..It may involve more patience but it is much more rewarding.. Majority of peoples only regret in dreading is that they didn't use the natural approach.

Reggae?

General Questions

Steel Pulse is one of my favorites.. Gregory Isaacs, Desmond Decker, The Itals, Toots & The Maytals, The Clash (I would consider them a punk/reggae fusion like The Bad Brains who also kick ass), Jimmy Cliff of course.. the older stuff is the best.. just create a "The Wailers" station on your Pandora.. usually plays amazing reggae music..

No love for Bob?

dready interests

My only idea would be that Robert Nesta has become some sort of obnoxious novelty.. A symbol of ganja smoke and shallow counter-culture similar to how a flag represents a nation, political stance, etc.. Unfortunately his estate not only accepts and nurtures it, they capitalize it. People seem forget his revolutionary ideals and unrelenting activism choosing instead to commemorate his tireless efforts in motivating people to get up and stand up by stamping his face on t-shirts surrounded by ganja leaves or bongs. Bob embraced a solemnly militant philosophy and now his name is synonymous with smoking weed; not rebellion against an oppressive oligarchic power structure. It's repulsive really but thankfully his music will never, ever die and as long as there are people receiving the message there will be discontent that transcends anything superficial like merchandising resistance. The revolution WILL be televised: God bless capitalism. Peace!

Restart fresh, or hold tight with a year?

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

no comb, no razor brother! pertaining to the question of cutting them.. that is completely up to you but give it at least a month before you do.. my philosophy, though, isif your going to use a comb or a razor you might as well start completely fresh and hold a funeral for the dreads.. bury them or burn them.. ive had 3 sets of dreads myself and both times that i cut them i have had something very bad happen to me.. i identify myself with the rasta way of life and in no way am i going to try to impose my doctrine on u.. but to me (and this is only my opinion) backcombing/crocheting/wax/dread perm/locticianis blasphemy.. all heads are capable of dread but i think our generationhas becomeused to the quick fix, instant gratification that is detrimental to a certain virtue that is the very essence in the journey to locks.. ive been growing the locks on my head now for about 3 years now and i did not have to do absolutely anything to start them or catalyze them.. i wash my hair 1 or 2 times every two weeks and now, finally after a year of freeing my head, my locks are looking like locks.. i have done seperating because i have had some gnarly knots growing in my bush.. i have honestly enjoyed every single stage of me locks but like u i have also considered cutting them for a variety of reasons many of times.. usually when their experiencing a bad day.. in the end its just hair brother.. it grows back and scientically are only dead cells.. just be free brother always.. dont do anything you dont want or have to do.. we only have one that we know of.. take a chance

Dreads and prejudices close to home

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

you are going to experience this whether you have dreads or not brother.. i will go ahead and assume that people have in the past treated you with disdain before you had dreads? and they will when you do.. people like to live in ignorance because its more comfortable than the truth any matter, also people like to bath in pride.. the only thing you can do brother is continue your journey and be grateful that you dont have that noose around your neck.. look back 10 years from now and observe that the same people who treated you with contempt are the same people that have not grown at all.. it takes work to grow and understand other people and most people would rather hit the snooze button on the alarm clock of tolerance and empathy and go back to sleep than WAKE UP! continue walking down your path and admire the scenery along the way.. even if it is cold, desolate, and ugly, because its something to be grateful for..
