making your own dread lock shampoo..

Dread Products

Making your own dread-lock shampoo can be super rewarding, but is it a deep enough clean... Depending on the base that you are using, most people use a black soap base, using a glycerine base is strongly advised against because of the build up it will cause in your dreads, and it is almost impossible to get out!.. Making your own dread-lock shampoo can be a fun way to save money and be creative at the same time! Also when you make your own dread-lock products you can make multiple supplies for multiple purposes, such as a PH balancing shampoo for your locks, or a straight up cleansing shampoo, or light conditioning shampoo.. The sky's the limit!! One key trick when making your own products, that I have learned by experimenting, is you always want to seep any herbs you use, having herbs tangled up in your dreads kinda sucks, that's why you would want to infuse your oils with your chosen herbs through seeping, not just adding whole herbs to your creations.. But there are many different herbs you can use for different purposes as well! One of my favorite blends to use is a mixture of rosemary, mint, chamomile, and clove. It cleanses well, and freshens up more mature locks.. Any ideas of different bases to use and different blends of essential oils and herbs.. :)

Sponges of Smoke!

Dread Products

thanx everyone for all your help!!! I am deff going to switch shampoos now! see if that helps.. I do make my own spray for my dreads with lavender, rosemary, mint, and chamomile, it does help a lot with the cigarette smoke smell.. Also once a month I use the BS, apple cider vinegar, lemon, tea tree, and sea salt mix.. I only do it once a month because it wipes out my green and purple dyed dreads.. also I feel like it makes my dreads too stiff.. But with the once a month it really does take all the build up out with the smoking and just living in the city.. And I agree Valere with the bonfire and camping season at our feet I know my dreads will most likely smell of burning wood.. it is a good smell tho, but not all the time.. lol .. :)

Sponges of Smoke!

Dread Products

Ok now we all know that our dread-locks act like little sponges sucking in everything they come in contact with.. For those of us who smoke this is bad! I wash my dreads about twice a week, and in between washes i will use the Knotty bot Knot tea, which smells amazing, but my dreadies still continuously smell like smoke, even when I smoke outside. I have heard of the Knotty Boy deodorizing spray, but have never used it.. I feel like that might help some, but I've noticed that most fragrant spays wear off, and back comes the smoky smell...Even people who smoke without dreads have this problem i know. But with dread locks I feel like it is ten times worse!!! and yes I know we smokers could quite and problem solved but for us who are not so ready for that leap..anyone have any suggestions on what to use to deodorize dreads??

i totally agree Valerie! rings are a fun way to dress up dreads, also I have rummaged through my jewelry boxes and found old piercing jewelry like spiral belly rings and old eye brow rings, and these are also an easy, fun way to add something to your locks whenever you want, and are super easy to take out.. you can also sew little trinkets to your locks in a loose stitch and just remove easily when you want them out.. there are many possibilities ! indeed! :)

thanxx for the tip :) .. yeah it sounds kool, but i personally wouldn't try it.. chalk is messy! lol i remember when I was little it would get all over anything i was wearing, and in my hair.. makes sense it would rub off on cloths when you think about it.. :o) .. but i'm sure there easier methods to dying dreads without dying them.. i know there is food coloring.. i've never tried that either, but i hear it works, but washes out very quickly.... hmmm..

hmm.. i wouldn't think mud would be good for dreads.. actually i did henna before on my dreads ( which is deff like mud) and I was soo sorry I did!! I was freaking out because I couldn't get it all out!! there were pieces of it like stuck in my dreads.. so i scrubbed the hell out of my hair for two days in a row and it finally came out.. I hated like touching my dreads and having to feel this stuff in them.. i was picking it out.. it was a bad move on my part. . lol

I know that mud baths are good for the skin, I wonder if a "mud mask" for the hair would be equally beneficial for the scalp. :P

Ever Changing Dreads

Dread Accessories

Many people feel stuck when they get dreads, meaning they have dread locks and that's the end of it. Even though beads are a fun way to dress up dreads, its not the only way.. If you are like me and changed your hair a lot before dreads, you can still do all those fun things with dread locks! I am continuously adding different color threads, yarns, and fabrics into my dreads.. This is a super fun way to play with colors and change up your dreads as often as you like. Also I love to experiment with different colors, even though dye is not the greatest thing for dread locks, it is not the worst either!... Another fun idea is to buy different color hair and twist it around your dreads, cross-cross designs, or candy cane swirls.. the sky's the limit! Please any one who is as experimental with their dreadies as I am please share some new ideas for dressing up dread-locks.. :)
