healthy hair after dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

i have combed out my dreads, which i will talk about some other time, since using this site (or any) on my phone, with auto correct, is very slow and annoying. it was time, things weren't quite right, and i'd had this gut feeling for awhile to comb out and start fresh later...i waited, they got pretty darn mature, then i combed them out...no, picked them out, and it wasn't easy. should've done it sooner and went with my gut rather than wait...would've been easier. anyway. i still want to do bs/acv, and use abunch of oils for thicker hair, hair growth, etc. i know the oils i need/want, should i just add them to the bs as usual?i want to get full benefit of the oils, and not let bs wash them away. then do vinegar rinse...is there a way i should do it to get all the benefits? i want to use grapseed+jojoba oils, not essential, actual carriers, then add various essentials to that. can i add that concoction to b.s/water in my bucket and just dump it all on my head at once?i want to take a few months to really support healthy, thick, hair growth, and will probly dred again next year. my hair isn't really damaged, a tiny bit of thinning from all the picking, but not really....my hair was thin anyway. but picking at your head for 35 hours, your gonna end up with slightly thinner hair than you originally had anyway. nobody can tell but me. i think for color/luster, dreads did me a favor...or at least all that time being chemical free. my hair looks better! ok well that is all :)

sticky dandruff

General Questions

ok, lots of us deal with the white mushy dandruffy stuff....like when uscratch ur head, it gets stuck under ur fingernails....mine has a smell. not a rotten smell, just a body smell. almost like when u guage ur ears, but not quite as strong.im not dirty, i always wash with bs/acv, and im doing all that stuff right. usually 2x a week unless i do something that requires me to squeeze in another wash. the washing also makes the junk mostly go away till its about time to wash again....mostly anyway. if this stuff is sebum, there's not alot i can do about it.my question is, can this stuff get stuck in my dreds like a gel or glue? it flakes like dandruff when i scratch it, and there are certain spots where i have it worse than others. the dreads at these "hotspots" feel spongy and almost like i put gel on them near the roots....and I'm starting to winder if its this old junk that has flaked and gotten stuck.can this cause dread rot?my hubby says my head stinks (he overexaggerates things a little tho, so idk how "bad" it is). my pillow isnt rank.last night i did a strong white vinegar cleanse...let it dry in my hair, then did agood bs acv wash, blow dried my hair some and squeezed the excess for awhile. the 4 hotspot dreads are the fattest, and took a lonnng time to dry. at 2am i could still squeeze a little out of em. and when i did, it smelled. kind if sour. im hoping it was some vinegar....it smelled like agood possibility of leftover vinegar. i don't see how it could be rot, my hair is dry within 24 hours and stays dry for a couple days. my worry is that the dandruff gel sticky crap has seeped into the dreads, got stuck, and is trying to cause a problem.even after that cleabse & wash last night, my "dandruff gel hotspot" dreads are still feelung like squishy hardish gel is in the hair for about 2 inches from the root. oh and my dreads are 6 months. i think I've covered everything....sorry, and thanks

ok i really do use the search before i make a post, but my search had been unsuccessful again.this is my reply to m last post, copied and pasted cuz i think nobody will notice it, as its gonna be lost in the reply part of that post. I'm basically debating combing out and starting over, for a few reasons. one, i like the idea of sectioning completely naturally rather than tnr...not that i did a bad job. i think I'm gonna have fat dreds around the back of my head, like the back and thbottom half, with smaller on the top and sides...which i think would be cool. lol ok so hers my copy and paste:CiArA i forgot something... another reason it wouldn't bother me to comb out and start over is my roots. i did tnr but i did sort of random sizes and shapes, which is ok cuz i don't really have sections criss crossing or anything. but I've had some sections re-section themselves, and noticed the other day that some of my root sections are just the "shape" of a line....like an extremely thin rectangle. so besides the dread maturing into some weird shape, I'm mostly worried that there will end up being alot of tension on the roots of it. i mean, a fat rectangle has more strength so to speak...more hair to share the weight of the mature dread. a line shaped one...not so much...I'm scared the matured dread would pop right off my head. so to prevent this...starting over and losing 5 months...doesn't bother me. id just get to enjoy my journey longer :) any advice on this?

should i be worried?

Dread Maintenance

im 4.5 months in, started with half-A back combing, then tnr, then soon learned they were better left alone :)

im getting ALOT of shrinkage lately, which i've had to come to terms with since i like my hair long. i started with it long, and now have lots of dreds above my shoulders. i've come to accept short hair, only because its for dreds.HOWEVER...ALL of my loops and zig-zaggy dreds are compressing into wads of hair...i mean i guess its normal? i've been looking for other ppl with pics like mine, i've only found a few.

The pics below is what im worried about....i mean its like a flattened ball of hair, attached to my head by a 1-2inch length of root. i dont see how that thing will ever end up being a "normal" dread. i dont want pancake dreds. lol. no thanks. anyone else ever seen this phenomena?

it bothers me to where ive considered combing them all out and starting over. the time lost doesnt bother me, its the end result thats more important to me. if i started over i'd probly do 100% neglect (with separation). but whos to say my hair wouldnt just do the same again....then that would be time lost with no purpose. i know shrink still happens. its jsut the flattened hairball pancake that freaks me out.

on a side note, one of these pics, i used to call that dred my pelican dred...its got a pelican bill/neck looking loop....was easier to see before it started forming a pancake. i love pelicans. :)

oh, and should i worry that my dreads are very flat?!

any comments/ related pics would be so great. thanks everyone!!

Young/Beginning Dreadlocks and Water

General Questions

maybe for now implement a "lighter"workout days in between, for those days of less washing. like...heavy cardio/sweaty stuff on wash days, and light cardio interval with mostly weights or something on "light"days. idk what kind of w/o u do, but u get my drift. i'm 5 months in and my hair is doing pretty good. i have NO pics, i suck, but even at 3 months my silky but wavy with a fraction of coarsness hair, was moving right along.

Young/Beginning Dreadlocks and Water

General Questions

i worked out alot when i started mine...the most I've done the bs/acv is twice a week. if my head was really sweaty, like dripping down my face, id rinse it well with plain water, if i had just done the bs/acv the day before or something. no matter what/how i washed it, i got it wet no more than every other day, unless i super super had to. i found that using a spray bottle of sea salt and water, and set to a straight stream, high pressure, was helpful in between the "good" washings. i used it to get to my scalp and spray away the yuck, then did a quick rinse in the shower with plain water. this kept my scalp from "burning up"from too frequent of sea salt spray, but left enough in to help lock, and the sea salt, imo, has natural cleansing properties.
