are you prepared?

Introduce Yourself

love this. our family has been dreaming of an earth berm home and being completely self sufficient. some of the steps we have been taking are minimizing, slowly but surely, our belongings. we also have rid our home and lives of harmful chemicals --we now make our own hygiene products-from toothpaste to dish soap to laundry detergent to shampoo/conditioner, lotions-body wash, hand soap-you name it, we're making it. we also grow most all the fruits and veggies we consume,as well as making our own almond milk, etc. and we are vegetarians so producing our own meat isn't a necessity for us personally. the one thing that bugs me is my inability and inexperience as far as sewing. man, if i could rip and stitch, we'd be set. great post. <3

back of my head is completly not dreaded..

Dread Maintenance

i agree, your hair WILL dread one way or another, however I understand how discouraging it can be to see all those dread heads that go the natural method and have dread-like hair within days to weeks. I am going on three months with mine (natural method) and the same thing seems to keep happening in the back. i've got a great start in the middle (back) of my head, which i constantly (daily) have to separate because it's trying to make one giant fat dread instead of lotsa smaller ones....but the hair underneath that is taking quite a bit more time. (i'm talking hair on the nape/by the nape and around the perimeter all the way to my ears) however, it has been sectioned/sectioning for weeks now, and those are not falling apart, it's just not knotting up very quickly. i have very thick hair with lots of wave (was ringlet curls when i was younger but now just super wavy) and i thought it would dread faster but i've learned to love the process. don't give up, you might just wake up one day soon like i just did and notice some little loops and tangles in that back hair. just be careful with them and let them do their thing-think of it as milestones. some infants and children hit milestones at different times. it doesn't make the child who cannot walk at 12 months less progressive or talented or intelligent as the child who is walking on his/her own at 12 months...it's just different for everyone. <3 good luck.

wow. that's unfortunate (the sewing machine incident). we initially started mine by twist and rip the first time around and had to constantly maintain them to keep them together-this time around i'm going natural and only a few months into it and i can see dreads forming on the daily by doing absolutely nothing. couldn't believe how easy it was and how much faster they're locking up on their own--i've spread the word to every one i know that are trying to start dreading-but sadly they all are still convinced they need to back comb and palm roll and use a felting needle...even with visible proof that mine are progressing much quicker than theirs. all we can do is keep spreading the word! natural is the way to go in all aspects of life!!

Dreading Methods

one thing this makes me want to do, is find a time lapsed video for natural occurring dreadlocks!! how cool would that be? anyone know of any already out there? i'm going to go search for some now, as i loveeeee watching dread timelines lol. i guess a time lapse would really be the same as a timeline.....but still, a time lapse in my mind seems way more awesome haha!
