New hairs dreading into a dread that's "too far away".

General Questions

I don't understand why they don't dread into the dread that's right next to it, but I usually pull them out until they dread into the dread closest to them.Should I stop doing this or is it essential to do this to prevent jumbo dreads from appearing all over? Today I had to detangle a dread for about half and completely detangle a smaller one that was hopelessly tied into it leaving a dread that was like 2 inches wide at the scalp. It just struck me as weird that I can't just let them do whatever.

I want dreads but I dont

General Talk

Meh, I know what you mean. I don't really really really want dreads. It's just totally impossible for me to keep loose hair because it's so coarse and curly that it requires insane amounts of maintenance and combing. And with the combing I'm also pulling out healthy hairs and such and I'm not really ready to go bald yet. And all the little coarse hairs get stuck in buttons, zippers, my dogs' collars and even pins in girls' hair (it might sound funny the time that it happened my scalp hurt for like 2 days). Waking up and not having to comb my hair is pretty awesome too.You shouldn't let your hair dread if you like your loose hair and you don't mind the maintenance. The "meaning" part is just silly. You don't need dreads for that. You can just start not caring about what all the zit-faced jocks think and you're already three quarters of the way there, without getting rid of your soft and "capable of cuteness" hair. When you want to get dreads and are more certain about that being what you want you can just try again.

would you cut your dreads for money?

General Talk

Currently I feel that around 20k per year of hair growth would be a suitable amount. It grows back. So does money, but money grows from money itself and as such it's better to have that then hair. This price goes up as I have more money, of course. For a "chance", however, I would not do it. Even if the expected value was equal to the 20k per year of hair growth, I would want more to compensate for the variance.

Essential Oils and Washing; Experiences?

General Questions

Tea Tree/Lavender are must haves (creepy crawlies/mildew preventative). Rosemary is also pretty good, but not neccisary. The rest is more personal. I happen to love peppermint. Especially when I accidently use too much :D. It's also suppose to be an disinfectant, but that could just be the plant only and not the oil.Anyone got any good combinations for...smell...?Maybe I'll try out another combination once my peppermint runs out.

High school formal help

General Talk

Does tie-dyeing work on moleskin or cord? Only really a suggestion if you live in a cold area.I have no idea what a high school formal is anyway. Why not just get a good suit? That allows you to go for a linen suit if you live in Florida or something. I think a full tie-dyed suit will make you look like you got stuck in a trip. Maybe just a tie-dyed...tie? lol. Or the easiest and simplest option would be a tie-dyed formal shirt. With a normal jacket/waistcoat/pants to go with that. It will still give some flair to the outfit without overpowering the whole thing.Cotton is a horrible idea in any sort of temperate/warm weather, though. So that is something to remember.

Does dread thickness affect the amount of warmth provided?

General Questions

This question suddenly popped up while walking outside. It felt pretty chilly on my face, it could simply be colder, or because my hair is not 100% dry from showering or...because I have started to let some dreads congo?Anyone noticing a difference in dread thickness from a temperature standpoint?

Lifestyle vs Dreadlocks

General Questions

They have special suits that prevent loss of body heat. Similar material used by divers in cold waters. So it's less uncomfortable then you might think. The only thing you can do is take your dreads 1 by 1 and squeeze the water out of them. If this doesn't make them dry enough then you should try ripping your dreads into thinner ones. Or comb them out and start over and make sure you separate when dreads get too thick. I've looked at your pictures and your dreads are pretty fat, if they were thinner then it wouldn't be as bad.

Strangers who touch your hair without asking...

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Wow that's messed up. I have never heard of anything like that here. Touching someone without asking, especially a woman, is going to get you slapped/arrested. Asking to touch someone is just...uhm...creepy. Very few people are that brash here.My hair is still the "messy curly" kind, though I doubt they're going to touch it even when it's thoroughly dreaded. I just look that dangerous :D.

Your experience with family/significant other not liking dreads?

Introduce Yourself

Explain that dreads are a part of your spiritual development and that if she supports you that you might mature enough in your endeavors to go full nutjob vegan fruitarian. You could very possibly end up looking like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSUKpYqFCbU I'm pretty sure she'll turn around then.

Giant Nest'o'Hair

Dread Maintenance

4 hours is just too much. 2 sections of dreads (if you look closely you can see how your hair prefers to section), grab them, clinch your teeth and pull. Have the other person separate the roots (the hairs that dread horizontally). Thats 1 dread and that takes maybe 5 minutes. Do it for like 10 dreads and thats like WAY more then the whole birds nest and you should be done within the hour.Stop worrying about things becoming a massive tangle. I ran around for a few months with 1 massive dread on my head and after separating it it split it into pretty solid dreads. If you separate once a week it's literally impossible for things to tangle so bad that it can't be fixed.
