What about bleach or dye? Malnutrition can cause brittle hair as well. Are you under weight?

Why don't you start with attempting wax removal and if you're not happy with the results then comb them out?

that'd NEVER work on me. If any of my kids called me a bitch they'd be indentured servants until they paid that off. Of course I'd never ask my kid to cut their dreads

Do you have anyone that can come help? That sounds like the best option to me to help keep them off your body. Can you braid them all up and put them on top of your head?
