3 months into freeform - visible scalp on the back of my head

General Questions

I don’t think separating is an issue, I know in the first pic of the back of my head, it looks like there’s 2 that are connected, but they’re not. There’s no pulling or tugging, all my locks hang freely.
I will keep flipping my locks from side to side, and putting my hair up above my head before I go to sleep, so I don’t lay back on my scalp so much

3 months into freeform - visible scalp on the back of my head

General Questions

Hey everybody, almost 3 months into my freeform journey now, which has been quite the adventure. My hair is locking up well, but I have noticed a couple times in the past 2 months, that there’s a scalp-y place on the back of my head. No lady wants to feel like she looks bald. :-(

Flipping them from side to side throughout the day does seem to help with the visible scalp, and I have the feeling that I tend to sleep on that part of my head.

Does anyone have any advice to help me through this? Most days I love my unique, freeform wild hair, but I have already had a couple tough days in this journey, where I’ve questioned why I’m doing this and what the heck am I actually doing. Words of support appreciated. <3

That’s kind of you SE. But I really do appreciate how you take time to respond to everyone who posts on this site, you are so helpful and supportive to everyone who comes by.
Writing and writing coaching, that is awesome. I like to write and should really make more time for it. I could tell from the “Dreaducation” post you wrote that you are very articulate. :-D
Thanks for saying my locks are unique and fascinating, I totally agree! They are a bit of Mother Nature on my head, each one so special. Stay well and good luck with your writing :-)

Posted a 2 month update, a little late but the pictures were taken at the right time. I love touching my hair when I’m separating, feeling all the loops and textures and knotty-ness, and seeing all the changes my hair is going through. Shrinkage has definitely begun, but I’m embracing it. I haven’t been this happy with my hair in a long time. ❤️

3 week update. I separate my head of dreads 2 or 3 times a day 😅 They are really developing and I love this freeform journey. I love what I see in the mirror and it’s been a real journey of discovery.

That documentary was heart-touching, SE, I enjoyed watching it. And the part about ICT was super intense.
I read that the 2022 gathering will be in Colorado, I’d love to make my way over there this summer, I’ve never been to a gathering before. In these strange and isolating times, I feel like the collective energy would be so healing. I really need that.

Two week update today, lots of messiness and progress! loving my hair and loving the process. Not brushing my hair feels so good. 😎 My hair was super tangly before, so freeform feels like a perfect fit.

1 week into freeforming and it’s going really well. :-) I’ve got really good sections going on that I’ve been separating, and quite a few baby dreadlets that are knotting up in the middle. I love the natural way my hair looks, I love not fighting with it ❤️ The left side of my head is locking up a bit quicker than the right, but I’m sure it will catch up in time.

I love the gradual nature of this journey, I love how these dreads-to-be are uniquely mine. I’ve been thinking about the divisive concept of “cultural appropriation” lately (I’ve thought about it before, since I had my first set of dreads 10 years ago). But on this natural freeform journey, I’ve realized: “cultural appropriation” is a marxist concept which fails to take into account how very many cultures have borrowed from each other over thousands of years years. *By contrast*, my hair locking up is something that it does 100% on its own, naturally, by my body’s own divine intelligence. How can I be “stealing” something, when my body is merely doing something naturally, following a natural process? Silly marxists.....
