It’s been like 8 years and I’m back!

Introduce Yourself

Hi There,  I had bangs and shaved sides when I started. As SE can tell you I had 2 million questions about it. Here we are 3 years later and they just seemed to dread so nice and fall into place. Funny enough I do have bangs again but not because I cut hair or combed out dreads. The amount loose hairs in the front were so much I decided to make them into bangs and I love it. If I want to dread them again it won’t be hard either. If you see in the beginning of my journey the bangs are super short and dreading nicely.  They grew super fast too.   As SE said to me about my sides don’t worry they will catch up and will do their thing, at some point you’ll never know it was a thing. This is true. Good luck and happy journeying,

My dreads 13 years natural

That’s awesome & they look amazing.  I do mine on the weekends too.  I always worry about mold because I live in NYC and it’s humid here.  I keep a bottle of the knot rot but in my 3 years have not needed it either.

WOW! Those are some incredible locs.  Love the wrapped up pic.  Just curious, how long do they take to dry?  I know mine are pretty basic sized like from chopstick thickness to fat magic marker thickness (the ones in the front are thinner) & they take most of a day to fully dry if not more.

Such thing as too small of a section?

Dread Maintenance

I also have some that are sooooo thin like that. Most of them are in the front but there are a few in the back as well. Also i had other ones that were that thin and thickened over time. Those particular ones are about sharpee thick now. And all of those are in the back.

Things to Avoid with Dreadlocks

Dread Maintenance

I absolutely 2nd this vote. It’s so light that it leaves no residue on your hair or hands. Yet it tames. It won’t hurt your hair at all.

A Bit Of Encouragement For Those New To This Journey.

General Talk

Hi Gazzunger thanks so much for replying. It’s good to hear from fellow dreadies.  The lopsided thing will balance out.  I had the same issue. I had some un even dreading and smaller or shorter on one side than the other. I’d love to see some pics.  It’s so good to know that this encouraged you and helped you to feel better about the process.  Yes do stop touching the hair though. Best leave it be and let it do it’s thing.  Easier said than done I know. I’m such a fidget and fidget with everything including my hair. Be well.  Peace.

Happy Dreading,

Luna

A Bit Of Encouragement For Those New To This Journey.

General Talk

This site helped me tremendously. I seriously knew nothing & actually met with a “pro” at some salon.  She was talking all about she has her loc for 20 years and they are down to her feet but would never take off her bandana. I asked if I could see hers since she does her own hair as an example of her work. I know how tight she pulls hair and am betting she has traction alopecia.  I even asked her about the tight scalpey look all her client have because I don’t & never have liked that.  It’s not attractive and she charged way too much.   I came home from that appointment with all these questions & feeling very unsettled about everything.  That’s when I found this site.

and great insights

Indeed it’s a huge difference.  And getting better every day.  if this helps just one person it makes it well worth the time it took to write it.  I have learned so much over the last 3 years. Thank you 😻

A Bit Of Encouragement For Those New To This Journey.

General Talk

Hi there, It’s been a while since I posted but wanted to post this.   It’s to encourage people new to this journey and to express the importance of patience, explain the tons of info I have learned all thanks to this site and all of it’s amazing members and the satisfying result that come with such patience & encouragement.   It’s not much just a before and after pic & some insight on what I learned. Keep in mind everyone’s experience will be unique to them but there are some things that just go with the territory. . On my 1st day I thought this day would never come. There were issues that I didn’t even think would be resolved in a decent way such as the fact that my sides were shaved.   The concern for what will happen as the new hair grows in and will it lock up the same way was always a huge concern.   Here I am almost but not quite at my 3 year mark. June 9th is my 3 year anniversary.   It’s like this, if you obsess over more than just washing & separating the time goes slow as molasses.   If you don’t think about it past the thought needed to take proper care the times goes so fast that one day you’ll look in the mirror and BOOM you’ll have a magnificent mane of locs that you won’t even believe. The process has been so interesting and fun. I had quite the ugly stage that seemed to go on forever but I roughed it and got to the other side.   I have only ever used the shampoo they sell on this site and it’s pretty much all you need. You don't need expensive products. Questions I have seen many ask as well as asked me: I have loops, lumps, bumps & loose hair should I use a hook? 1st of all NOOOO! 2nd   Don’t worry about it because your hair will do exactly what it’s meant to do.   How many locs do you have?   I have no idea.   I have lots of loose hair which is normal and with that being the case I find new babies all the time. How long did it take to mature? The ones from day 1took 2-3 years the rest- still maturing. Our hair is forever going through the process since it grows and new hairs will form into babies that mature fairly quick. Not to mention new growth. Something else I get asked alot is about new growth on existing locs and the answer is for my hair anyway - they just grow into the loc. No maintenance needed.   They just grow that way.   How much length will I lose?   It may depend on how you started, your hair type & some other things   but ultimately it will depend on how long your hair is. Basically you’ll lose a percentage of your length so the longer it is the more it will shrink. Since mine wasn’t that long it shrunk alright but it wasn’t that drastic so whenever I wished I started with longer hair I remember that. The reason for the shrinking -your hair is curling up into itself to create the proper knots to form your locs. It’s all part of the process. So remember if you ever feel discouraged, like combing them out of heaven forbid going to a salon just remember what I said.   I have seen so many people posting about giving up but don’t.   Patience is key!   I hope this will helps at least one person feel better when feeling discouraged.   it will makes this post all worth it.   The below pic is me at 5 months and me today. Be well, Be safe and Peace!
