Hey girl, my first set of dreads were extensions and I grew to HATE them. I felt no emotional attachment to my dreads at all, but maybe you feel different. if you want a strong connection (spiritual, mental) to your dreads i highly recommend not getting extensions. they became a burden very quickly.
your own hair would probably still dread, but the only way to attach the extension (to my knowledge) is with a crochet hook which we all know is damaging. If you want dreads for vanity reasons then I say go for it... but I feel that growing your own dreads is much more rewarding in the long run.

I washed with the liquid nag champa for the second time today and I think it's so amazing! I've seen more drastic progress in the last four days than the past two months... for real! my "kind of" dreads are locking up much faster and my typically itchy dry scalp feels wonderful 
soooooo pleased. I'm gonna wash with it for a week or so and then write a thorough review on the dreadlocks shampoo website. woo!

I chose to use my debit card as a paypal 'guest' and it keeps telling me it was declined. so annoying, i used my card two days ago and checked my balance online, it's fine.

Hey man! We went neglect on the exact same day!!! and my hair looks almost the exact same. I TnR'd just a couple out of curiosity and those are doing well but for the most part I am in the same boat. Keep at it, we can do thiss :D
