Hello :) I'm new into dreads. Started a neglected journey 1 month ago, any tips?

Introduce Yourself

Welcome,
Embrace the mess! It’s only just begun!
Allowing them to choose their own sections is only part of the process. Without separating you’ll have one dread. With lots of diligent separating you could have many small ones.
I watch for the sections and then separate. A few I chose to let come together because I prefer medium/thick but I have all varieties. Right now I’m brushing out a large one I may have let join a long time ago, but it’s very thick and at the nape of my neck, and I can feel the two distinct dreads at the roots, today became the day lol!
I use vickisdreadlock shampoo now, I’m in love with the patchouli. Also the activated charcoal is my fave! It leaves my scalp and hair so fresh and clean!

Welcome and embrace the mess!

Today I’ve decided to brush out this one dread. It’s been bothering me for a while, it’s SOO thick at the nape of my neck. I think I let them join a long time ago or I entirely missed it, either way it’s very thick and at the roots it’s naturally separated.

It’s crazy how much hair is in a dread! Look at the length from just the first inch maybe of the dread. It wasn’t but a smidge longer than that lock next to it before I started.

For those who are curious, I’m using a fork lol and it’s been a few hours of messing and unknotting, trying not to break any hairs I don’t have to.

To the people whos had multiple sets of locks

General Questions

I’ve allowed my hair to lock twice naturally. Each time I allowed my hair to form its own Sections. Only difference has been in my hair care routine, different products- no coconut oil this time! They are very different locks.

Hey there I can relate to not expecting to have to separate SO often! I too had to do it daily the first few months! It gets better hang in there. Now I just separate as I feel them tugging each other and as I’m feeling for stickers lol! I’m about a year and half in. Getting the liquid activated charcoal shampoo from Vicki really hastened the process, I would say I lost most my length once I started using her product HOWEVER that also meant more locking and less separating (I was grateful to have very long hair though! because it shrunk by half!) but it was so gloriously clean and light, it was/is worth it.

Welcome!!

is it okay to wet my free form dreads every morning?

Dread Maintenance

I use a spray bottle with EO usually once a day, it doesn’t take the place of a shower but it’s refreshing!

Gazzunger the Grey:

CORONAVIRUS  - hows everyone coping?

@Tashtash - sorry to hijack your thread but can't a new post to work for some reason

"Hi all you locked down dread folk..hanging onto this crazy olde rock spinning in space,  hope the current Coronavirus pandemic isn't affecting anyone too badly.

UK has gone full lockdown, only emergency, essential services peoples working. Everyone else stay at home apart from essential journeys; Im kind of glad to be working (Postal deliveries) to pass the time. At least the weather is stuck in a dry spell (its been one of the wettest winters on record) wich is better than being cold and wet..

Im lucky to have garden and I'm hoping to use some space for veggies to save relying on shops.. anyone else got any growing tips?

@ soaringeagle - hows your "grow your own" project working out?

Meanwhile. back at the dreads - someone at work tried telling me i Should tie my hair up due to covid19 "it was on google" hahaha.  My hair is like

quarter- third way dreaded (pics will follow dreckly ) and making some weird and wonderful shapes.

Stay safe everyone, keep smiling and look after the less fortunate

Are you composting? That’s the best way to enrich the soil for nutritious foods.

We’re currently in lockdown as well. Though it’s not publicized (here anyways) our boarders of the state and other states are contained- there is legislation in place as well. I’m grateful to live in the country and have already been homeschooling my children- many are in a state of shock AND denial.

I’ve been making reusable masks lined with non-woven fabric inside to actually block the germs.

Let’s Keep our loved ones safe and not be a source of contamination!

I do agree with SE to not use acv and baking soda, that cleans the drains lol. However diluted acv is not inherently bad! Diluted enough it moves from an acidity of 3 to 4 or more with dilution. (Why I always dilute my acv). Soaking vs rinsing will have a different impact on your hairs as well because yes, soaking hair in acv is not good! Rinsing in diluted acv is not bad when rinsed out, rinse thoroughly. Hair is a 4.5 to 5 in acidity.

We use acv in our baths to combat anything from diaper rashes or parasites from the dirt or the like (like ringworm and chiggers to acne and danderuff)

Usage has the biggest impact. Also for a detox grime removal I’d strongly suggest vickies activated charcoal shampoo, it cleared everything out of my locks better than acv can, acv helps the itch and dander vickies got the lint and anything else!
