essential oil spray question.

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Thanks so much! Another quick question. Are there any essential oils that are not good to leave in? I saw a lot of recommendations for oils to put on your hair then rinse out. But was unsure if some oils are not ok to just leave in.

Thanks again.

I am writing up a page for the site on essential oils. It doesn't sound like you have any problems so I'll give you some info for general. I hope this helps. Clary Sage is good for the hair follicles. Lavender balances pH. Rosemary is a bit of a conditioner so not sure if you want or need this. Lemon is good. Lemon juice is drying to the hair. but lemon oil assists for scaly, itchy scalp. I think you have a nice blend already. If no problems, I think that you choose what smells good for you. Personally I sometimes use pure Witch Hazel as a carrier for the oils for a spray. Also, Sage is good for hair follicle by assisting with nutrients to the hair shaft. Eating foods with Sulfur as Sulfur maintains strength of hair. Hope this helps.

essential oil spray question.

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I'm new to the essential oil deal. But did some research on the site and elsewhere. I love the feeling and smell of the oils and wanted to create a "leave in spray" to use. I have spent 9years without ever using anything that would strengthen my hair (would only wash it with DHHQ shampoo which does nothing to help the hair or scalp other than clean). So anyway I was wondering if someone knows the effects of some of the oils to recommend a blend for me. What I'm looking for is a blend to spray on and leave untill next cleaning. I want to strengthen the hair from breaking (try to revitalize the hair a bit from 9years of abuse), stimulate/ refresh the scalp to encourage new hair growth, but also not make my hair too soft (my hair is naturally soft and wavy so I like to keep it a bit dryer to encourage the hair to dread quicker at the roots. Right now I made a mix of peppermint oil, rosemary oil, lemon juice, and water. But wanted to get some input from some people who actually know what they doing with the essential oils.

Thanks,

Introduce Yourself

Ok so this is a bit off tangent from what hippiegal said, one of the strongest forms of marketing and control is to rob one of intrinsic value and worth, leaving them void of identity and sense of true worth. I believe humanity must be identified and valued, and when we believe we are not, we naturally will seek it out. This then is where marketing comes in because once you are left insecure without a sense of self worth and intrinsic dignity they then sell it to you in the form of a product. Why else do they spend millions to have some actor, musician, or athlete don their cloths. Not because Jay Z knows a good product, but because subconsiously they are trying to imply that by buying their product you will in some way take on the identity of that person, hence fulfilling your felt lack of identity.

Oh yeah dreads. So in a very minor way the marketing techniques of DHHQ is perfectly in line with the societal system (make them feel insecure about their identity "dreads in this instance") then market that if you use said product you will have something that others will envy, hence granting that identity you have been conditioned to think you need to buy.

Ok I'm new and already went on a conspiracy theory rant ;)

Oh yeah soaing eagle, what you said about the nazarite vow is the thing that was getting to me. Now I'm not a nazarite (but don the dreads as a reminder of the symbolism "the symbol of your separation unto the Lord shall be upon your head") so to me some wear religious symbols as a reminder to them around their neck or tattooed on their arm, but for me it is upon my head. None the less, to then comercialize that symbol, allowing that thing to be something that draws me into the superficial cycle of our sociatal system is then a contradiction in and of itself. To me my dreads are a reminder of where I came, and the system I'm being called out of, yet in that I was sucked right into it by feeling more and more insecure about the appearance of that symbol.

So yeah my scalp feels great, but spiritually it is actually quite liberating on a deeper level.

Final note, being new to a community about hair, if I just went way too deep and too soap boxy, I apologize!

Thanks for the kind comments. Funny thing is after reading through this all and deciding to go a more natural route it is almost liberating (maybe a strong word when talking about hair) but then again for me personally my hair is not just dealing with style but is a reminder for me in connection to the symbolism it caries from the Jewish and Christian scriptures.

It is funny though cause my wife and I were just saying how there is a whole market of Arm and Hammer products out there cause everyone is finally realizing what our grandparents all knew (you don't need all of that chemical crap). Anyway if anyone is worried about the BS wash, on the box of arm and hammer I got they had suggested uses on the back and one was to add BS to your shampoo for a deeper cleaning of your hair!

Introduce Yourself

Hey all just joined the site. I'm glad I found it. My dreads are about 9years old now (3rd set). I went the semi natural route. Never used wax or any similar product but used the Dreadhead HQ shampoo and was nuts about keeping the roots tight (rubbing) and sticking all of the loose hairs back into the dreads (dread balling). My dreads are fairly neat and clean and are formed real well. But my scalp was always itchy, my hair was always breaking, and the older my dreads got the more gaps I had (scalp showing.) Anyway I have been using the DHHQ shampoo since I started my dreads. Did an ok job at cleaning (atleast I thought) but as my dreads got tighter and longer it took more and more of the stuff to clean them. I ended up having to shampoo and rinse about 4 times to get them completely clean (i.e. no white soapiness left after rinsing). Well last week I was going online to drop another $40 + on more shampoo and then thought I need to do some research to see what else is out there (The dread head stuff was the first and only stuff I had used.) Anyway I came across the BS/ acv deal on this site. I figured "hey it is natural, don't have to order online, and for me (don't got much free cash) it was cheap!" After that kept reading on the forum and read about the different oils and also about the pitfalls of over maintaining your dreads (which every one described is what I have experienced.) So I'm starting off trying to keep my hands off the dreads (which my wife is psyched about cause my playing with my hair drives her nuts). I'm hoping that with the oils to encourage stronger and more hair growth along with letting the fuzz go free I will begin seeing new dreads form to fill in the gaps. Also I just did my first wash with the bs method. WOW. My dreads have never been so clean. I did a mix of BS, tea tree oil, jojoba oil, orange oil, and water. Afterward my hair felt cleaner than ever and it felt like my scalp got air for the first time (kind of felt like I had been wearing a hat for 9years and finally took it off). My wife looked at my scalp and said that it looked the cleanest and healthiest she has ever seen it (this is after the first wash mind you.) I then made a conditioner to rinse with using jojoba, pepermint oil, acv, and rosemary oil. My scalp feels 100% better, hair feels ridiculously clean, and I must say my hair smells pretty good too. So all of this to say after 1 day my dreads feel healthier than they ever did over the past 9years. Plus I just cut about $20 a month out of our budget by using simple things God gave us instead of mindlessly throwing my money toward slick marketing.
