Sponge Dreadlocks Maintenance

Dread Maintenance

I don't fully know much about how to maintain sponge locs. i usually wear a do-rag when i sleep but that comes straight off so i just sleep without covering my locs but i don't think i should continue that. whenever i wash my hair some of my locs unravel i'm fine with waiting for them to grow i just don't know if they're supposed to unravel like that. I also don't know if i should i just sponge them every morning and night or just do it once in awhile.

Need a little help on my dreadlock journey

I just figured out how to get dreadlocks on my own without spending much money, but i'm lost on how to keep my dreads from unraveling whenever i wash my hair. i'm 1 month by the way. i also would like to know what to sleep with on my head when i go to bed. i tried a stocking cap but that ripped apart and i tried a do rag but that ended up on the edge of my bed when i woke up the next morning. I've been told everybody has a different journey and i'm fine with waiting on them to grow i just don't want them to dry out and unravel

General Talk

Around two years of going natural i have noticed some changes. Before it seemed to be the messy, zigzag and flat ends stage of the journey. Then certainly two of my thicker dreads on the back of my head with pretty huge rounded flat ends have changed. The ends have folded over right in the middle during a wash and stayed like that after drying. So each of the two ends have become thicker and more round like the rest of those locks. After two or three weeks (3 washes) the folded ends dreaded together, so there is no way to unfold again.

This was very cool to see, that hair is folding over while being wet without any force and holding together till it was dreaded. This journey has to offer a lot of crazy things, maybe it is the reward for being patient?! I'm very excited what will happen in the future, it's almost like science!

Have a nice week!

P3RMAamp:

Well I did revamp my hair a bit. I brushed out the tips. They were holding water badly and slowing the drying process for sure. And I did decide to go back to having an undercut again. I gently crocheted the removed dreads back into existing dreads(though the pictures are before I did that). I'm much happier with this. No more annoying hair around my ears and everyone fits into a pony tail now. When my hairs down you can't even tell.

Though I did see something a bit concerning. Out of curiosity I went into a couple of the dreads. I do indeed seem to have build up of some sort in there and it's a bit yucky. I think a charcoal cleanse might be in order. Doesn't smell like mold just dust and head grease. Eww.

I also have some blunted tips, some are still lose. After wash I try squeez out as much water as i can out of the blunted ones. That helps to shorten the drying a lot. Still takes a bit longer for them  to fully dry than the ones with lose ends, but i don't wan't to comb the ends out...

Rubber bands on dreadlocks

Dreading Methods

I was always told you never want to use rubber bands on loose hair because it causes thinning and breakage. I’ve never understood why many think it would be any different for dreads. Hair is hair. Rubber bands don’t belong in it.

I've washed my hair a couple of times with the charcoal bar and it is definitely cleaning some stuff out. They feel lighter and less hard.

Though in other news I think I might have another scent for Vicki to make, citronella. These costal biting gnats are driving me insane. They get through the hair to the scalp and bite like mad. Especially since I shaved the sides of my head.
