Flotation Chamber-Soaking Question

General Questions

I am curious to try floating in a flotation chamber (basically floating in Epsom salt water for an hour, face-up, in a chamber). Would having my dreads soak in salt water for an hour do any harm? I believe I read somewhere that you should avoid soaking dreadlocks for any length of time, but I may be making that up. Anyone have experience in a flotation chamber?

Finally doing it.

Introduce Yourself

First of all, the most compliments and encouragement I am getting (and I've only had dreadlocks for about 2 months) is from African Americans!  They are so fascinated by them and give me so many compliments!!  I haven't gotten a single negative comment from an African American thus far.  Just random strangers in public saying how awesome they look!  Oh...and the amazing look they give me when I saw no wax or product was used.  Second, I feel you about parental approvement, but only you can make yourself happy, no one else.  Just get used to the everyday normal questions people may ask however annoying.  For example, I'm vegan, and was so tired of people asking me where I got my protein.  Being defensive is not persuasive.  Just be happy and show that you're happy!!  That's the best thing you can do! Lastly, the dreadlock shampoo that SE recommends is so awesome, helpful, and smells sooo good!  Happy dreading!!!

Loose Hairs Within Dreads

Dread Maintenance

☮ soaring eagle ॐ:
2 things you had your dreads just over a month  they are babies you tie your dreads back at work, its proobably loose where its restricted from moving give em 6 months and you wont be able to find those spots

That makes sense considering the spots they're loose are the points furthest from where I tie them; therefore, the tightest spot probably.  I'm going to stop tying them and wear a loose-fitting tam at work.  And yes, they are definitely babies!  Really digging the shampoo you suggested, very nice scents.

Loose Hairs Within Dreads

Dread Maintenance

First, big thanks for all the helpful information and the fantastic website!  I've had my dreadlocks for a little over a month.  A combination of twist and rip and backcombing, no products used, and I wash with Buck County's tea tree liquid soap twice a week.  Sometimes I spray a tiny bit of tea tree oil diluted in water at spots on my scalp that feel dry.  I have typical Scandinavian type blonde hair.  For work I tie some back loosely and let others hang; outside of work, I let them hang naturally.  My question is, I have about 3 dreadlocks (and others starting) that have completely loose hair near the roots.  I see a lot of topics about loose roots, but not many about sections of straight hair within the actual dread.  I don't touch them, I leave them to do whatever they want.  But I sorta want to know why this has formed in the same spot in a few.  Loose hair at scalp -> knot/dreaded -> 1-2" of straight undreaded hair -> another 6 or more inches of knots and dreaded hair -> then the loose tips (which I want to keep loose).  Some of the straight sections seem to have grown, but I don't see how they could completely straighten out with the knots that have formed below.  Anyways, just curious as to why this happens more than anything, I don't plan on touching them.

Introduce Yourself

Received my Dreadlocks Shampoo order just now in the mail.  That was fast!!!  And a free sample of the tea tree oil shampoo too.  Anyways, another quick question regarding their products, would you recomment their gel for frizz (organic lock magic locking gel), specifically on new baby dreads?  I'm not putting anything in right now and am letting it go crazy, but I'm a groomsman in a wedding this October, and I'd like to calm it down a bet.  I was told aloe vera would calm frizz, but also have learend it's conditioning.  Any thoughts on Buck County's gel for formal occasions?

Soaring Eagle: would you suggest diluting this specific shampoo as you suggest with Dr Bronner's?  Or is it good to go right out of the bottle?

I ordered the "Lockin Up Liquid Dreadlocks Shampoo Nag Champa."  I just ordered one bottle for now to see if I like it.  I appreciate the tip, I felt like the black soup was a bit conditioning and have been looking for alternatives.

A combination of twist and rip and backcombing.  Mostly backcombing though.  Thanks for the heads up, would you recommend Whole Foods 360 shampoo?  I have that as well.  Or any other specific brand?
