Thanks so much for posting this. So great to see how they're evolving. I'm just embarking on my dread journey again, tentatively. Got a few natural dreads left from earlier in the year, which I love, but I combed out my 6mths natural dreads as went for a job in the health service, and just didn't feel happy in them anymore. Not sure what was going on with my head at the time! So back we go again...

how natural dreads have changed much more than my hair

General Talk

I saw this link about hair being an extension of our nervous system - not sure if it's already been shared but I thought it was great. I definitely feel my whole life is moving in a different direction since leaving my hair to dread, not putting on chemicals, etc. I feel so much more in touch with the world, the environment, animals, people - all sorts. I wonder why other people can't see what I see! We have some great discussions at home -we're learning to cook vegan food - I'm not great at maintaining a vegan path - but try my best and am definitely more conscious now. Am hoping it all rubs off on my kids.

my journey.

dreadlockssite appreciation

Lovely post. Echoes everything I feel about this journey. It is definitely a journey, and sometimes it will be easy and fun, and sometimes I know it will get hard. But like Hippygal said, we find out about ourselves on the way. I don't wear as much make-up now - hardly any. Since using handmade soap for my hair I think twice about all the chemicals I put on my skin. I starting buying and feeding my kids organic food. One step at a time, I hope I'm making a difference to mine and my kids lives, and maybe who they grow up to be in the future.

Blessings xx

Help! Having a wobble :(

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

It really is a journey isn't it? It's a month later and I have one chunky flat dread at the back of my head. I;ve proudly shown it off to my friends who all seem supportive. I guess thay might really think I'm gling thru some sort of midlife crisis! But I don't care. I wear less make up now, I'm choosing healthy products. It all seems to be part of this.

Keep strong everyone. One day we'll be sharing our dreadie photos! xx

Help! Having a wobble :(

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

Thanks everyone :)

I love this place - it's so good to know you're not on your own. You're right - all I have to do is wear it up if I need to, then wear it down when I don't. I've always wanted them, and loved them on other people for years, so this is my big chance. I'm slowly unlearning being obsessed about my hair, and the way I look - all part of a journey I'm on, and I see the dreads as part of that. But I still worry about others TOO much. Guess that's something I need to work on!

Thankyou so much for the support and encouragement xxx

Help! Having a wobble :(

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

Not sure if it's the same in states, but "having a wobble" means starting to get cold feet about something - not being sure, doubting yourself etc. I'm having my wobble about dreads. AArgh!!

It's been 3 wks of not combing, using a natural bar soap, now onto bicarb soda. But I do put my hair up a lot of days, which I know slows it down. I'm guessing it's probably normal in the early stages, especially as I'm surrounded by non-dready folks, and just starting a course in training to be a complementary therapist. There fanatical about professional appearance etc.

My family support me - hubby, kids, and my daughter thinks I'd look pretty. She said she'd be sad if I stopped. So just looking for a listening ear, and support to keep me on the right track. :)

oh, and no-one understands the natural process, even my hippy yoga teacher, who said she had dreads years ago, now has dread falls, and said "I thought we were supposed to be becoming more normal now." I guess she means as we get older. :(

Shampoo

General Questions

I'm wondering if this is why my hair's starting to feel greasy? I'm using a natural handmade shampoo bar/soap. My hair is starting to dread I think. My kids say it looked dready today, so I was pleased, but it just feels greasier than before. Maybe I should leave the soap and do the baking soda thing?

Hi from the UK :)

Introduce Yourself

Thanks for the welcome. Such a lovely place to meet like-minded people. Yes I agree, I think we do have more patience as we get older, I don't think I was ready to do this years ago :)

Introduce Yourself

You're right! Maybe I should make up some cards to hand out with the site details on. I can't help looking at people's hair now, wondering if they're starting dreads!

Because why wouldn't EVERYBODY want them?! :)
