Help! Save My Dreads

Okay so I have recently become concerned at the size of a few of my sections that are kind of really big. I don't mind if I have a few thick ones but I'm afraid these are too thick. I'll put some pictures down bellow. The first two are of the same dread and the one I am most concerned about. And anyway my dad says that it is too big and that I need make it smaller so I kind of have to, but its one of my oldest and therefore kind of mature-ish and has already started drawing up and folding as you can probably see so I'm not really sure how I should proceed. I have tried pulling it apart before but um it didn't seem to really be working. If somebody could advise me as to how i should go about it I would be very thankful
