Tanky I am tender headed also...the thought of brushes my dreads out makes me cringe. You were brave to do it once.I don't plan on getting rid of mine but if for some reason it came down to that I would probably cry the whole time. When my hair is up you can't tell my hair has locs...it just looks bumpy. 
I get slightly spazzy sometimes. I think as women, we are so used to maintaining our hair a 'certain' way all our lives and when it changes so drastically it does take time to get used to it. I started my dreads late in life (45) and I've always had my hair cut, colored and always styled to society standards.
I cannot tell you how freeing it has been to let all that shit go! I still have moments and I probably always will, but I love my messy, free hair. I love me.
I can't imagine taking my dreads out and starting over. I'm a big baby and tender headed and prefer to leave them messy. Your hair looking wild and crazy is part of the process, enjoy!!
I read lips also, but know ASL. It is never too late to learn Kelsey!
