Social Work

dreads jobs employment issues

Hey everyone! I'm a college student working toward a master's degree in social work, and I'm just curious if anyone has any experience/has ever known a social worker with dreads. I'm still 3 years away from my degree, and intend to work as a clinician/mental health therapist. I'm prepared to comb out or cut off my dreads if it's a necessity, but I'm really hoping it won't come to that... Thanks in advance!

Natural persecution

Introduce Yourself

I'm only 2 1/2 weeks into my dreading journey, so I haven't gotten a lot of feedback either way. However, when I posted a picture on facebook of the back of my hair, after my husband affectionately referred to it as a "dingleberry", I was surprised at some of my friends' responses (do you need shampoo, why do you want your hair to look like a dingleberry, etc.). I politely explained that the picture was taken right after I'd washed my hair, and that natural dreadlocks look a little wild and crazy for a while (which is part of the fun). I haven't gotten anything but positive remarks otherwise.

Scandinavian dreadlock progress

Dreadlock Picture Gallery

Awesome progress, and thanks for the info! I'm American, but of Scandinavian ancestry (same hair type you describe), so it's nice to get some insight on what I can expect (I'm only 2 1/2 weeks in).
