Very little of my family is blood, most are too distant both physically and mentally from me. I've had to take a "mental vacation" from most of my in-laws because of their beliefs. My own father has no idea about many things and I just leave it that way. My family now consists of husband, 2 grown sons, daughter, mother and sdad, my womens group, and an oddball variety of special friends both IRL and on the 'net.

My advice to you (non-binding, take it or leave it LOL) is to not cut the anchor that ties you to your family, but allow yourself to drift. They may catch up or they may not, but the ability to will still be there. Surround yourself with acceptance and love.

Dreads turning flat????

General Questions

The whole process of the creation of dreads is pretty fascinating. I thought they were to be round until I came upon this site and was taught differently (you can see that as well, from all the pics). Some of mine are round, others are flat, some are both - going from round to flat to round on the same dread. Some that weren't flat are that way now, same goes for the round ones. They are constantly changing.

It's looking great! Mine are at 6+ months and are like that in the back, all zig-zagged up and down. Just hang in there, they will catch up.

Hey everyone. I've got a question.

My dreads will be 6 months next week and the sides and back are coming along great. But the top of my head (see pic) seems to be wanting to stay in one large clump with dreads coming off.

I separate almost daily, because the sides and back cling together like kudzu (or velcro) but I don't separate down to the scalp, just keep them all from congo-ing. I cannot separate the top without pain.

I don't wear tams or hats and I only wrap a scarf around if we are going out to a store or to eat, so maybe once or twice a week for no more than a couple hours total. Around the house, I only use a shoelace to loosely keep them away from my face at meals. I sleep on my sides and I don't believe there is anything rubbing on the top of my head as I sleep.

So, my question is, should I be concerned or just go with the flow? Can I (should I) correct them now or let them correct themselves? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You will have to ask a recruiter for the particular branch you are interested in. I do know that Sikhs are allowed in the US military and they have long hair in turbans, so there are religious exemptions made.

A friend of mine's daughter went into the US Army, just last week, and she cut off all her hair, including a dread or two she had, but she did it for convenience for herself.

I worked in a hospital (legal office) and there was a very elderly patient who had put her hair up in a bun years ago and had never washed it. (As the hair would grow, she'd just fasten it down with more bobby pins.) In the ER, a nurse was bitten by a spider that had crawled out of it. The hospital had to shave the patient's head for health & safety reasons and, because of legal reasons, save the hair mass in a sealed hazardous waste bag. I had to type up the report and saw the evidence with my own eyes. It was, hands down, the most disgusting thing I had seen there and did give me nightmares. In fact, our whole office was itching our heads for days. LOL (Sympathetic response of course...)
