Hello! Dreads are awesome!

Introduce Yourself

So you were crocheting, but you stopped?? I don't really know what to tell you about that since I have no experience with crochet locks. I will however suggest to you to leave your hair alone and let it do it's own thing. I don't suggest doing a RnT.

When I first started I was impatient and did like 3-4 sections where I did RnT thinking my hair would then be as I wanted. Those ones I started on my own soon untangled themselves and I was back to square one. Just enjoy your hair how it is in whatever form or shape it may be. If you just let your hair go and let it do what it wants you'll learn the lesson I did. Somethings, even when concerning your own body, you just can't control.

Think to yourself "what will I gain from instantly having locks right now" "why do I need my hair to be locked up?". Just go with it. Have fun. Fuck everything else and just be the way you are right now and don't worry about what you'll be/have in the future. It will all fall into place when it's time.

Good luck, man. I hope some of that was helpful.

Bulbous congo lock

General Questions

Hello to all on Dreadlockssite! I never post and usually only lurk around to see what other people are up to, but today I have a question!

So it's coming up on a year since my hair has started locking itself up and when I started I knew that I wanted larger than average locks. I wouldn't say at all the locks I have are massive, it's more of a random mix of different sizes. There is one though on the upper left side on the back of my head that is sort of like a very large bulbous dome of hair. I really like it. I think it's unique and funny and it makes me laugh/smile.

My question about this one particular lock is how is it going to grow out?? I feel that my hair is at somewhat of a stand still. It got to a certain length and almost stopped. I know my hair didn't actually stop growing. I don't care either about how quickly my hair grows or how fast my locks mature. I'm very very happy the way my hair currently is, kind of wish it will just stay like this and not actually get any longer.....What am I talking again? I feel like I got lost on my point here.....Oh yes! So, this bulbous dome lock I have. How will it grow out?? I'm very confused by it's design and nature. It has also attached itself to two smaller locks so I assume they'll end up growing together.

As I think about it more I don't believe this question can really be answered and only time will be able to tell.....I don't know. I wish I could some way put a picture up. Maybe I'll try to get a picture of it through my built-in laptop camera.

I feel like this post is almost pointless and I apologize for it. Mods you can delete it if you want. Thank you to everyone who actually got to the end of this post. Much love to all <3 Take it easy

-Ralph

Second thoughts

Introduce Yourself

I can tell you that natural locks won't be perfect. Some will be flat, some will be zig zag. I currently have a weird round dome lock on the back of my head. It's just the way it is. Nothing is perfect.

Why did you decide to go with locks? You say you get looked at and whatnot, but what did you think would happen? Don't you look when someone walks down the street with blue mohawk? Screw everyone else and what they think. I have many, many reasons for letting my hair lock up, but one of those reasons was I wanted people to know I was different, that I wasn't one of them. I expect looks, I don't care what so ever what anyone thinks about me. I'm proud to be the person I am and I like the way I look.

That's a cool thing about locks. They teach you to just let things go, go in which ever direction the wind may take you, you are who/the way you are and that's just the way you need to be.

I guess some advice I can give you is to really think of what you want/expect from having locks. Maybe you'll decide that it's not for you, that the attention is too much. Believe me you'll get everyone's dumbass opinion or comment about your hair. Or maybe you'll see the beauty in it and why you wanted locks in the first place, possibly even come up with a whole new reason for locking up your hair.

In the end just do what makes you happy and what you feel is true to you. Fuck everyone else. I wish the best of luck to you and much love.

ive alwaus just let mine be as it wants and yea its all uneven but so am i so its all good

I don't care that it was uneven. I thought it was strange why one side of my body produce more hair than the other and why the locks on that side side happen to clump together more.Is it one side of my body is stronger? I'm right handed, but my left side seems to be more dominate.

Body and hair?

Introduce Yourself

Hello all. I have a question for everyone, but first I'll give you a little background....So about this time last year was the last time I got a hair cut. At first I didn't want dreadlocks, I wanted a massive rat tail. Then after awhile my hair started locking naturally because I didn't bother to comb or do anything to it. I said fuck it and just let my hair do its thing. More and more my hair started to lock together.....Where am I going with this? I forgot. Let me skip to my point.

On Either side of my head there's almost an identical lock. If I follow them they're basically on the same plane of my head. The only difference is the left side of my head has larger lock than my right. Not only is the right and left side of my head different, but my face and chest too have different amounts of hair. I decided i will not use any soft of scissors or razor and just accept what every hair my body grows, regardless if it's uneven or not full (ex. my beard). The left side of my beard is much fuller than my right. Same goes for my chest. What is it? Does anyone else have this experience? And now that I think about it even my left ear is pierced. I just can't figure out an explanation.

I'm going to try and take pictures, but I really don't have a good way to put anything up. I don't have a fancy phone so any picture I take with it will be blurry and not detailed. Don't really have any other way. I'll see. But I'll just put this post up for now.

New to site and new to lawwwks

Introduce Yourself

Hello everyone! You can call me Ralph. I'm new to the website and semi-new to locks, new to the right way of doing locks is what I should say. I had a friend who was locking his hair up with wax and at the time I had a massive afro thing going on...one thing led to another and I had greezy wax locks that eventually grew mold after a few years. I've learned my lesson, took my lumps and I'm back to start thejourneyover again.

Until about a month ago I didn't even know I wanted to go through the process of locking up my hair again. I was growing my hair out, not combing it, wearing hats all the time and because of the nature of my hair the back started locking up. Little itty bitty locks the size of pins started forming, I enjoyed that my hair was doing this. Thats when I knew I wanted locks. My plan was to just let my hair grow as it wanted and not pay any mind to it or anything of the sorts....and then yesterday happened. Because my hair is so wild I began to look like buckwheat. I grew tired of my buckwheat like hair and I thought that if I pushed my hair in the right direction I might get things moving a little faster. I mean anarchitect can't just start constructing a building, he needs blueprints and a foundation to form his masterpiece. So what I did was the ol' rip tear on a few sections of hair that I created, that and twisted or lumpcertainparts together. I believe it was a success. I'm just going to sit back now and see what it does, possibly do some maintenance here and there.

Any advice, tips. or knowledgethat could be passed down to a novice is much appreciated. Anything would help :) Thank you all for your time :)

Love- Ralph <3

Picture #1 (White doctors coat): Taken on 4/4/13. That was after I did my rip tear/twisting (sideshow bob style!)

Picture #2 (Plaid shirt): Taken on 4/5/13. The next morning after the twisting and the ripping. Obviously it got flattened and messy and what not, I expect that so I'm not worried or anything. I understand that my hair will go through many changes.
